On a recent off-road excursion (trails in a national park) the transmission or transfer case seems to make a terrible clunk when shifting between D-N-R but only when the rear diff is locked up. It literally sounds like a tooth is busted off one of the cogs.

While driving only just when switching into 4L/locking diff? Clunking into gear is normal - it will happen on all vehicles if things are aligned quite right. The manual even says so.

A missing tooth would be a more recurrent sound as you are driving.

It’s while it’s in operation, not shifting. Slightly feather the gas in, clunkage, go over a medium sized rock, ckunkage, shift to N, clunkage. Disengage the rear diff lock and it’s super quiet. I figured it was feedback from the front torsion to the rear when locked up, kinda been concerned about getting too far off the beaten path like this however thanks for the replies. This forum is awesome.
