Hey Everyone,

Bought a new to me 2014 Ruby Red Metallic Raptor in March with 37k miles, the previous owner has done a few tasteful modifications, the only one I dislike, is that he put 22" wheels on a 35" tire (Toyo Open Country RT).

I am looking to stick with a 35" tire, but move to an 18" wheel, I consider this truck my Weekend Daily, don't drive it a ton, but I definitely enjoy driving it regularly. That being said, I will occasionally tow, and I've got a farm that I will go to that's a ways off the beaten path. I won't be using this truck as a hardcore offroader, so I don't need an MT. Looking at a Hybrid/AT tire. The life of the tire isn't the most important thing to me as I won't be throwing a ton of miles at this every year, but would rather have a good performing tire in all seasons as I live in the Midwest and hoping to find a tire that doesn't drive you crazy with road noise.

After some research a few examples I came up with were:
General Grabbter ATX
BF Goodrich K02
Cooper AT3

I'm definitely open to hearing other opinions, please don't use this to simply bash one or the other, would like some constructive opinions to go off of.

Thanks in Advance

I would go back to a 17” wheel, otherwise you’re stuck with heavy D or E rated tires in 35x12.5R18. More sidewall usually equals a more comfortable ride. Finding a set of newer takeoff wheels/tires will probably be the most cost effective option, but there are a bunch of nice 17” wheels available.

I was thinking of trying to find a set of factory beadlocks, I actually really like the looks of those on the Gen 1s.

Isn't stock tire D rated though?

Edited, my info was wrong, I didn’t realize this was a Gen 1 thread.

In 315/70R17 Discount tire shows 11 tires in D. In the 35x12.5R17 there are 3 in D.

I’ve been happy with the K02’s so far on my 2020. They are quiet for a 35” tire, and what little off roading I’ve done has impressed me. What’s sold me on the tires is how they perform on my brothers Colorado Z71. My brother isn’t afraid to use his truck, and in the deep snow and ice he’s liked the tires. I know it’s not the same truck, but here he is pushing snow with the lower air dam on his truck.

There are only a few choices in C load rating. Others will likely chime in and say that D or E rated options are working fine for them, but I can’t see putting 12K+ worth of tire capacity under a Raptor designed for 10K worth. In 315/70R17 Discount tire only shows a Toyo Open Country M/T, Toyo Open Country A/T III, and the BFG AT KO2 in C load. They show 11 tires in D and 24 tires in E. In the 35x12.5R17 there is only the Goodyear MT/R available in C, but 3 in D and 29 in E.
This is in my door jamb? It shows D rating. I'm not saying you're wrong, I just want to be sure I understand why it is C vs D.

Thanks.

Nope, I was wrong for your truck. Interesting, I didn’t realize the specs on the Gen 1 were different from the factory. My bad, I didn’t notice this was in the Gen 1 forum. I just looked up the curb weight on the Gen 1 at 6,113 pounds, so about 500 pounds heavier than the Gen 2. That certainly expands your options.

Yea, a lot more options in the 17" wheel.

I've run a handful of tires over a few trucks, Raptor and Ram, and have a few thoughts.

Best tire so far that relates to what you want: STT Maxx by Cooper. Smooth on road, grips well in soft sand, mud and hard packed. Wearing well with 14k miles on them so far. Only a few lbs heavier than the stock KO's too. They have preset locations for studs too if you use them in the ice/snow. D rated tire. Really good in rain.

I didn't have a good experience with the KO2's, specifically the 35x12.5x17 version. Bad luck on my part maybe, but the tires were a pita to balance and one went out of round within the first 10k miles. I've put maybe 100k miles on 35's among my trucks(had a few raptors) and have never had that happen for any other tire. Wasn't happy with them in sand either.

I had the AT3's on a Ram for a bit, good tire, but definitely would have limitations if you went offroading in deeper terrain. But good road tire.
