I use to use just a map and bread crumbs. I use an app now too.
I love the inREACH Nav as a backup and for non (and emergency) messaging. For primary nav it is pretty sucky even with the app. I just went with Gaia and am really happy with it. A local guy sells some nicely put together layers that complement backroads mapbook layers as well as some of the Gaia layers.

Just announced they finally rolled out Gaia for Android Auto which works for me. They've had carplay for a while.

The end of the road. Literally.
