Historically, have 5.0+ engines consistently improved?

I'm trying to recall if Ford's larger engines have consistently gotten better each year or not. Does anyone recall certain engines that have been notably worse than their prior year's version?

The F-150 302 I drive at work is a Dog. Gotta put a boot into it to keep up.
I've had a lot of 302's and this is the worst.

well the old 5.0 pushrod motor, the only thing in common with that to the new mod motor 5.0 is the emblem lol.

But yes they do often improve on engines over the years as it's needed. The 5.4 2v had spark plug spitting issues so in 03 they doubled the plug threads. Then in 04/05 they went 3V on it. The 5.0 in the 2011 mustang was 420 hp and it's getting revised for 2015 with over 420 hp (hasn't been published how much yet, just more).

Got a 5.0 in the wife's truck ('11) and it runs great. Lots of power and excellent mileage.
Now Ford's diesels...that's a story into itself, once the 7.3 went away things seemed to go downhill. IDK much about their current Diesels.
