Slightly off topic, but I highly recommend the Rimrocker Trail between Moab and Montrose. It is 160 miles in total and sections of it are just county roads that you can fly over. My GF got motion sickness I was going so fast. Lol. Other sections are rock crawling with incredible views.

We were in Ouray last week, but went through Cortez to get to Moab so we could stop at Mesa Verde. In hindsight, your suggestion would've been way better lol

If anyone is interested, here are a few sandy and fast spots:
- some dunes and a great wash on the way to picture frame arch
- the valley area west of uranium arch
- the long NE/SW section of bartlett wash road
