Help with some grinding noise

    Anyone know what this grinding noise could be? I have had metal clanking noises since about 2k miles on the first drive of the day when the transmission is cold.....and now I get this rough metal on metal grinding noise coming as well. It happens about once or twice a week. Took it to Ford a week ago and of course they said they cannot duplicate and there seems to be nothing wrong. It seems to always be in low gears and I feel the truck giving me some resistance until it switches gears and noise has surpassed. Sorry for the bad quality, but I at least I finally got it on my dash cam.

    Here is the first video I showed Ford with the metal clanking. I have had it since about 2k miles. They said it was a screw that was lose on a heat shield...I am not so sure I believe them. 6 seconds and then softly at 12 seconds:

    Have you resolved this issue?
    I’m at 6,300 miles and I just heard it several times this week and last week. Notice it around 2nd or 3rd gear while light acceleration. When I heard it for the first time it freaked me out, i got to check if something was hung up under the truck. The sound is exactly what the first video shows.

    It’s the IWE. The little valve by the drivers firewall is bad. You can take it to the dealer and they will replace or you can order a new one for 10 bucks. Just replaced mine. There is a revised design. Google IWE valve and you will see threads on here and the F150 forums. Common issue that can eventually screw up the IWE hub but if you change the valve you should be good.

    Part is FL3Z-3A788-A, $6.89 from Tasca parts. Get a spare.

    Sounds like IWE. I had the same problem at 5K miles. To isolate, I suggest put it in 4A when it happens and it should clear. I drove around in 4A (safe on dry pavement for testing) for a week and never heard it. The challenge was getting it to happen with the service tech riding with me to hear it.

    Ah ha thank you! I just googled this and wow amazed how many 150’s have this problem. Is it the solenoid or check value that causes the malfunction? Looks like most people have issues a couple years into it. Hm.

    I will order a couple. Seems like a simple replacement rather than the inconvenience of bringing to the dealer etc.

    Thank you! Ugh this is annoying. I hear you that with the service tech. I’ll order the part and give the dealer a call on available date to bring in or fix myself, which ever comes first.

    For me its the check valve. The part I gave you has hoses and all. Some just replace the check valve with a YG360, which while not the same does the job. Some even do two in a row. Regardless I ordered the part i listed, which may have been revised. The number underneath the part number was different than the one I pulled off.

    With shipping I paid $15 from Tasca. Shipping was more than the part. I regret not ordering a couple more just in case. Obviously its not the best design as you can see from the internet.

    Anyway, my time is worth more than $15 bucks, so I'll skip the dealer on this one. Since I replaced it nothing. I have almost 7k miles now but i heard it with 2k or so on the truck and intermittently since, more so when it rained. I knew it would never do it for a dealer.

    Also when you pull it out you can check it easy enough. I just tried to blow in and out like a straw. It should only work one way, but when I first pulled mine i worked both.

    You can drive in 4A too and you'll never heard it since the hubs are engaged but spinning free.

    I appreciate the feedback. This is really good to know. I am schedules to bring my truck to the dealer tomorrow for the ventilated seat that I never got a chance to do so I will have them look at this issue as well. If they come up with nothing then I will replace the tubes myself.

    Once replaced with the new tube assembly FL3Z-3A788-A or check valve YG360 will this issue happen again in a few thousand miles or this is the actual fix with the improved part?

    I think I remedied it. Went to the dealer and they said there was a screw lose in a heat shield....yah sure :flipthebird:

    Anyways, I just took the advice of many and just started with the check valve. I used this:

    Havent heard any noises since. I would recommend just trying it out. Its cheap.

    I read up a good bit and dont seem to see a lot of recurrence. Seems more people complain that the dealer replaces the IWE hubs and that DOESN'T fix the issue. I just think to myself its a part that some low bid manufacturer cranks out for Ford in the hundreds of thousands a year so you may get a hand full that have an issue.

    Get a couple, cheap insurance.
