Who wants to climb down a ladder in the middle of a cold night to go take a leak in the middle of the night?
Not me or my wife.
I prefer to tow a camper, set up basecamp, then go off roading or hunting or whatever.
Also there is a bigger resale market for campers vs roof top tents (at least in my area) so it’s not a big loss if you don’t like it and sell. I enjoy using an indoor bathroom and sleeping on a mattress.

Yeah if you have to go into SERIOUS offroad stuff + camping/over landing, then sure, trailer is not the way to, even offroad capable trailer….but if I was doing that I’d want my bed space for a chase rack & other stuff, not a tent. I’d just bring a good tent & setup as needed

Geez that doesnt sound light haha. How has your suspension reacted to that kind of weight? Also curious as to why you went that setup over the GFC Platform Camper

Yeah, suspension had a slightly noticeable change. I have perches for front and rear ready to go on when I put the tent on.

I decided not to go with the GFC full setup because of the way you have to get to the tent through the roof of the shell. I wanted to be able to use the truck without the tent on it also, plus the smart cap is just well built from what I’ve seen so far. I like the modularity and have added a few items (Half bin, table, kitchen).

I can't imagine backing a short little off road trailer a quarter mile up a jeep road. And I enjoy backing trailers. The big win for the trailer is that you can get far enough in to filter out some of the riffraff, drop it, and set up camp. Then go explore the harder stuff. Or the high speed stuff.

So happy to see someone else using our beasts to access epic camping locations.

Our Gen 2 is Rosie the Raptor, with a FreeSpirit mounted below the roofline. She gets us to our location fast, then hacks the off-road in comfort like a Jeep can’t touch, and gets us to camping locations away from everyone and stunningly beautiful.

Dispersed camping never looked so good :)

And you asked for photos… so! ….

Those photos are great! I love the surplus box you have mounted on the bed rack as well!

I totally get that. Thats why I like that you can get in through the bed of the truck rather than having to mess with a ladder. Much nicer than climbing up and down those skinny little things at night

If money wasn't an object I might have to go with one of these tents (if you can even call them a tent). I'm not sure who's out dropping 20-30k on roof top units but these are about as cool as it gets.
