As a result, we’ve created “Effective Lighting Score (ELS™)” for one reason; to better describe lighting performance in the off-road space which uses four key factors that illustrate the true performance of an off-road light-giving a (ELS) score. Baja Designs has launched an interactive web page to better describe “Effective Lighting Score (ELS™)” that not only is limited to describing those four key factors, Blend Angle/ Blendability / Distance / Output. But features an interactive simulator comparing Baja Designs with our competitors using a simulated behind-the-wheel 3D environment using data measured by an unaffiliated 3rd party laboratory. This not only allows you to see how each score is derived but see a side-by-side comparison through an accurately simulated environment.

Off-road racing and recreational lights are not limited by the same rules as on-road DOT-compliant lights, leaving no ceiling in performance. With that in mind, consumers in the off-road market desire bright lights with sufficient distribution to improve visibility while driving over all types of terrain. An ideal lighting package will inspire driver confidence by eliminating dark spots in the driver’s field of view while the vehicle pitches and rolls.

Traditionally off-road lights have been described using only Raw or Theoretical lumens (the amount of light) and the distance (how far the light shines). Through years of research and development, Baja Designs has determined that the most important quality of a light is the amount of free light that exists outside of the main beam pattern that creates a smooth transition of light from the center to the peripheral that reduces eye strain in recognizing obstacles and improves endurance. The smooth distribution of light benefits the driver’s experience but is not well represented by the aforementioned industry standard specifications of peak beam intensity, total raw or theoretical lumens, and distance at a randomly derived lux (typically 1 or .25).

@Baja Designs do you have the ELS for the LP9 Pro Racer edition? Do you have any isolux plots to compare the LP9's, LP6's and LP4's in the different beam patterns? Do you also have candela numbers for those lights as well? I know you have it listed for the XL Racer edition at 358,731 cd. So I'm just curious if the LP9 Pro Racer edition will have more distance (and candela) or less? Thanks.

Hey,
We do not have any Isolux plots charts available or candela numbers for the LP series. We measure lights based on the minimum amount of light a driver needs to see a rock, hole, vehicle, or vegetation on the road. We measure light to 10 lux or the amount of lights your eye sees at twilight. We go based on the sufficient light that you will need to safely drive off at the maximum measured distance of a light. All the lights are measured at 10 lux and any of the values can be converted into 1 Lux, using the provided formulas on the white paper. If you are interested in how we do it you can check out our ELS or Effective Lighting Score that outlines our way of measuring usable light. Our ELS white paper has the specific data points we used and can be found here White paper . We do not have the candela on LP9 racers due to us not measuring in candela. The distance between the XL Racer and LP9 Racer are going to be around the same, but the intensity and brightness will be significantly improved due to the Lumens Difference between the two. LP9 Racer you are looking at 11,025 compared to the 4,300 of the XL Racer. I will also recommend checking out our Lighting Zones Explained information to achieve the ideal setup on your vehicle.
