I am buying a Big Tex 70PI-X trailer, either in 16' or 18' lengths with slide in ramps for a trip from Texas to Colorado. Going to be hauling between 3k-5k # in cargo plus ~2k # trailer weight. The ground to coupler distance on the trailer is 17.5". The height from ground to top of my hitch receiver is 21". It seems like I'll be near maxing out the drop on the 4" drop hitch but the 8" they offer seems too excessive with the risk of bottoming out? If I upgrade my leaf springs and add another inch or two, I don't think the 4" drop would cover me anymore, would it?

It's been about 20 years since I've towed anything long distance like this and I might be over analyzing because of fear. Any advice or tips are welcome. Also, if you have any experience or advice on Big Tex Trailers, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks in advance!

I think it never hurts to overdo it. Just don't go over the 8k pound towing capacity.

Thanks for the feedback. I bought the 4" Andersen hitch. Hope it works for everything I need. I realized also that if my truck increased height too much, I can always buy the 8" drop hitch part directly from Andersen for around $150.
