So for anyone that is interested, Carstream released an update and instructions to make it work with the current version of Android Auto. It does require root access on the phone though.

The guy who writes the Android Auto torque display app is actively working toward a solution also, and has been posting updates the last couple of days, so I think he is close to a breakthrough. When I get it running again, I will post up here for anyone that is interested.

I have switched to AA Mirror. It gives you full mirroring. If you don't root your phone, you can assign some hotkeys on an overlay to give you some functionality. If you do root your phone, you just simply get full phone mirroring with full touchscreen support (the root gives you the touchscreen support). Works pretty well.
