tailgate

I want remove plastic tailgate cover and pole handle assist so I can have normal flat surface on the tailgate. The dealer and Tasca, eBay, etc have an OEM plate for $170-190. Give me some other options like a diy please. Thanks for info & pics

has anyone else had issues with the cover for the tailgate step getting ripped off by things getting taken out of their bed? Seems like a really cheap set up for that tailgate step which I have never even used. Curious if anyone else has had this problem
