I'd take vehicle inspections all day any day over smog checks. Vehicle inspections ensure the safety of the car and in my opinion is more important then smog checks.

I wouldnt replace my current Raptor with a Bronco, however I don't plan to buy a new Raptor unless they come out with a SuperCab again. Wishful thinking.

Only way to prevent this is to garage the truck and never drive it. Just happens sometimes. Its not a problem. Grooves can happen on road or off road. Its not the fault of Ford or anyone else.
