Well, seems the weep hole trick worked! I drilled a 3/4" hole directly into the screen where the outside temp was and...well, it doesn't show 64 F anymore. Seriously though, I jumped in the truck after work (was then about 95 F outside) and the outside temp read correctly on startup...

I'll work on a few. BTW, the '64 is not restored, entirely original and RUSTY...shows well at 20 feet, kinda. My grandfather bought it new in '64. I inherited it when I was 18, put lots of miles and years on it, put it away 15 years ago and just recently got it running again.
