You typically pull the pan when you change the oil? You are seriously hardcore. I dare say, most of the rest of the human race drains the oil via the drain plug, changes the filter and puts new oil back in through the filler neck...if they want to be really fancy, they might even use a funnel.
On automotive engines, large metalics are caught by the oil pickup screen in the pan, to protect the oil pump and filtration system, so never even make it to the oil filter.
