Legal or Not

VA law is black covers on unless off-road. He can't pass you in the same test if you just put the covers on he has to retest and record the fail. It sucks!

The issue is two fold.
One they can be turned on while your high beams are on, hence the covers.
Two they are above a certain hight restriction for lights.

I guess going forward I will keep them covered with the black covers and take my chances. Any thoughts on the KC D3 cubes being legal or not. I have one clear and one Amber on each side wired to an uplifter not to the low beams.

T j is correct. I ran into this issue and the law states they must have the black covers. Only reason I ordered both amber and black covers for all of my lights while I lived in VA.

Just ordered the black covers for the 4 KC C3 in my bumper. I am undecided if I will put them on or not however, I will keep them in the truck just to have them and to put them on during state inspections.

I have light cannons mounted on the no-cut hood mount brackets. I just had my truck inspected in VA as well, and was told by the tech that next year I must remove the lights before bringing the truck in or it will not pass. They did have black covers on them when I took it in, otherwise it would not have passed. This was at Sheehy Ford in Springfield where I get free inspections.

I have a guy at a gas station down the road that does our motorcycle inspections. Sheehy's emissions computer was down so I took the truck to him for the emissions test and I asked him about it. He said as long as they have black covers they are fine, even mounted at the base of the windshield. He went so far as to say you can have any lights you want so long as they are covered. I will be getting my inspections with this guy from now on. I think it is all interpretation by the tech. As soon as I leave the covers come off though.

Don't be complaining if you end up with a ticket for not having the lights covered.

Technically it is one light. It's above the hight limit for uncovered lights and would require to be covered.
