Found one other instance of a differential whine, that one was at 30mph under load. Mine seems to just be starting, 2014 with 6K on the clock. Only happens when decelerating from 78 mph down to 71 mph (speed limit is 75 on the freeway so everyone relax about me racing around town, haha!). I had a 1990 Fox Mustang back in the day with 3:73's that were not installed correctly and that thing HOWLED on deceleration, this is nowhere near that, but I am "almost" positive that it's the rear end gears on deceleration.

Obviously I'm headed to the dealer to get it checked out once I return from a 10 day trip coming up, just wondering if anyone else has had any issues with the rear end whining on deceleration? Hoping it's just an anomaly, but I want some data if others have seen it so I don't hear back that they couldn't duplicate the issue (because we all know that's what I will hear back...).

Thanks in advance!

Some gears sets just need to have the back lash reset after the break in period and at decell is generally where you'll hear the howling. Personally I wouldn't be to worried about it, tell Ford to check backlash and put it back to spec if needed.

Hi, azoufan!

First of all, I hope you have a safe and fun trip! Let me know what the dealership has to say about the noise once you get back; if possible, take your tech along for a test drive so you can demonstrate the whine for them. If you need help from my neck of the woods, just give me a shout. :)

Crystal,

Thanks for the reply, I am back from the trip and had the truck looked at today. I was told this is "normal" and that the shop foreman signed off on the noise being nothing to worry about. Was told 3 technicians looked at it to confirm. From the paperwork:

"Test drove and verified slight read end noise 70-75 tip in and out. Road tested with shop foreman. Noise within acceptable limits. Checked for TSB and SSM. Nothing found. Normal noise at this time."

I would like to discuss this with you along with a few items from the experience that I do not wish to post on a public forum as they are organization issues that should be handled between us, not put on display for all to weigh their judgement on. I will reach out to you after the holiday weekend. Talk to you soon and thanks again for the follow up!

Common, tell the tech to adjust the preload on the pinion bearing to specs.

Don't take no for an answer.
