Rail Dust... anyone dealt with this before???

White truck here an no spots. I'm around a ton of white Fords daily (oil field) and don't see this sort of thing and a lot of those trucks are rarely if ever even washed.

My Raptor spent its first year in Salt Lake City and had some rail dust on it. Mainly near the 6.2L emblem and in the rear tire well. I used Iron-X and it removed all the rail dust.

Now that the Raptor is in the super dry West for the past six months I have not seen any more rail dust.

Crystal has been able to get something started for me and it looks like they are going to give the truck an "acid bath". I don't know that it is any different than the DWC or Iron-x but I will keep you posted on the end result.

Good to hear Crystal is on the case!

That is definitely not normal to have recurrent rust spots to that extent, especially with the paint cleaned and protected properly.

I dropped the truck off at the dealer a week ago on Sunday, for a Monday appointment. I have a noise in the rear end they are trying to diagnose as well as the rail dust. They ended up keeping the truck the whole week but I got it back Friday afternoon. They replaced a yoke on the drive shaft and had the truck detailed. This process is different than what the regional service manager described but as long as it got the rail dust off I didn't care. I more want the issue documented in case I have bigger issues down the line. Well, they didn't get it off. My service writer was great about it, offering to go out himself and get it off. I ended up taking the truck and cleaning it myself. It took me about 6 hours but the paint looks almost perfect (custom pinstriping and distressed look from offroading excluded). I am once again amazed at the quality of the products from Adam's Polishes. It wasn't effortless but it does look good.

In case you are interested, this is what Deep Wheel Cleaner looks like when it finds something to eat. I didn't take pics until I was almost done but the passenger side of the truck was almost completely purple.

They didn't fix the noise but the service ticket is still open and I will call my writer this morning to get back in the shop.

Awesome. 1:1 DWC does a great job at paint decon - plus it means you don't have to buy another 'dedicated' product for that part of the job.

@Slacker where is all that metallic contamination coming from? It seems to me that having such an ongoing issue with it, especially with the paint protected, is not normal.

Where is the truck parked or driven a lot that it might be exposed to metallic contamination (near a railway, industrial site, neighbor that has a metal shop, construction site, under a bridge)???

Also, if you have not already waxed it after the decon, I would try Liquid Paint Sealant (if you have not already). It will offer more protection than a carnauba wax.

Same job for 12 years. Same house for 20 years. Nothing new in the area except a few houses going up on occasion. Owned almost a dozen new Fords. Currently also own a white Escape which does not have this issue. In fact, I have never had this issue with any vehicles until now. I have always taken care of my vehicles' appearance. Drives my wife nuts. "Please use the handle and not the paint to close the door." Yep, that's me.

So to answer your question, something is different about this truck. Brake pad material, rotor material, clear coat, who knows. But this is not normal in my opinion.

Ok folks--do the research and find my detailing instructions. Comprehensive and they work.

I use Adams Products because they work Very Well period.

Now that is out of the way -- if you have contaminates in the paint they must be removed either chemically or with a clay bar process. (check using the plastic baggie over the hand)

After that is accomplished apply the Adams Machine Sealant per the instructions EXCEPT I let mine sit in the sun to cure for an hour. Then remove with the appropriate plush microfiber towel. After 24 hours preferably 48 I then apply the Americana Wax. Apply the wax at least once a month and the sealant twice to 3 times a year and you will not have damage from fallout.

If you do not stick with this regime and let it go for longer and if you live in an area where this is prevalent then you will have to deal with it again. Not fun or good--my trucks are always kept outside because they are too tall to fit in the garage. Always have been and always will be.
