a standard 31in antenna is 1/4 of a wavelength at 1 watt. since the frequency band is from 87.7 to 107.9 (in the U.S.) taking 3inches at a time helps keep the wavelength to height ratio intact to retain the best possible reception. that is until it is to low to have a proper ground plane at which point reception will be terrible.

Well I went with the suggestion of cutting off the original and it works GREAT. However on another note the Craven Stubby was rusty as it could be. The screw portion took me about thirty minutes to get it out with some penetrating oil but I finally got it but needless to say the stubby is really a stub now. I guess with the weather here on the NC coast it is not designed for that type of environment. It is a great product still but I am glad I got to it when I did.
