Will it be faster than a TRX???

I believe the GT motor was discussed in previous threads. The GT 3.5TT does have some differences as compared to the Raptors. I don’t have them off hand. But also the GT is a much more expensive vehicle and the cost of the motor can be justified. I also think Ford has mileage and emissions targets for the Raptor that differ from the GT car. I think the only reason they used a V6 in that car was weight/space, verse a V8.

the reason for Ford not using a V8 was all about the restrictions due to the class they were running the GT in. Physical size was an issue as well but first and foremost was the motor could not be larger than a 4.0 if it was forced induction.

They could, but the GT parts are low volume, expensive, and are not suited to a truck application (cams, intake, etc). That would mean redesigning and manufacturing said parts, which is cost prohibitive. As mentioned, the Raptor is much heavier and less aerodynamic than a GT, so there would be a lot of engineering in terms of thermal management to get it to pass all required Ford durability testing.

I understand the GT motor is not suited for a truck application but hypothetically couldn’t they make this current H.O Ecoboost make 600hp ?

this would keep the weight lower than a predator optioned truck and still have the power to weight ratio to be just as fast on pavement as the TRX while still having the better off roading truck

I’m sure they could, but it would almost certainly require upgrades to the engine internals and cooling system to handle the additional power and torque, which of course has a significant engineering and manufacturing cost associated with it.

I can buy a TRX for MSRP + they are giving me all the money for my 2020... I'm holding off to see what the Raptor R can bring. (tempting not to do TRX deal though.)

I would wait, TRX prices will continue to drop as they are producing decent numbers of them. Keep driving your Gen2 and saving money for either that R ADM or money down on the TRX if you go that route. The 7.3 with a supercharger would be easier to produce than the predator motor I think - don’t know this however. The 7.3 is built for daily abuse in the superduty. Adding 300 hp to it and putting it in a lighter truck should not take a crazy amount of engineering, but can the rest of the Raptor handle it without upgrades which could add up quickly. To the original question no way the R will not be faster than a TRX, until Fiat pulls there $&@k out of their pants and puts a smaller pulley on the TRX and cranks it to 800 hp.

I've had the opportunity to own a Gen 1, Gen 2 and now the TRX. The Gen 1 was my favorite Raptor. It set the standard for all others to emulate. The Gen 2 was fairly short lived for me. Loved the looks, hated the sewing machine sound from the cam phasers when cold started. 32K miles and it was gone. Replaced it with a Ram Limited, which was an extremely nice vehicle. Ram is hands down leading the market on truck interiors. When I first saw the TRX concept at the Detroit Auto Show, I told my wife, if they build it, I'm buying it. At that time, I was tired of the Turbo 6 in my Gen 2. The TRX is a beast. It gets similar fuel economy as my Gen 1. It most definitely feels heavier than a Gen 2 Raptor...because it is. But I have "adjusted" to the feel, and have hit pretty significant whoops at speed and it soaks them up. Plus, it does not have that jittery feel that my Gen 2 had driving over potholes and railroad tracks at normal speeds. And the power...let's just say that its more than adequate. You will not feel the need for more. Then, and I know its the old argument from when the Gen 2 was first introduced, the sound is incredible. And whether you want to admit it or not, that makes a huge difference in the visceral experience in the car/truck you drive. Would I have a Raptor R...You bet. But Ram beat Ford to the punch. I am entertained by the comments like "Ford is in the business of building a better off road truck than Ram." To me, there's not a nickels worth of difference in the off road performance between the 3 version that I've owned. The biggest difference is in the on road drivability/experience. 90% of my driving is on the road. The materials used in the interior are a step above the rest, and I appreciate it. It is my Daily Driver after all. Ram is leading the pack in this segment currently. I thought I was Raptor For Life until I actually daily drove that Turbo-6. I've always felt that Ford dropped the ball on what their customers wanted when they forced the turbo 6 on all its Raptor Buyers. Ram realized what the market wanted, and brought it back. Ford will respond with the R, and I hope it's that "Truck for the Ages." But, I fear that pricing will keep that from happening. The TRX has set a new pricing standard for factory off road trucks. Mine was at the very top of my price range. Raptor R, I'm sure will be beyond that. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to give my impressions as an owner of all.

Your impression comes across as quite biased. The Gen 2 Raptor was not an attempt to try and “emulate” the Gen 1. The Gen 2 surpassed the Gen 1 in every regard. Sales of the Gen 2 also have far exceeded Gen 1, so your assertion that customers don’t want the EcoBoost is completely unfounded. I daily drive my Gen 2 as well; the old 6.2 is a slug compared to it. The EB is faster, tows better, and gets significantly better fuel economy. There is no downside.

As far as a cam phaser noise, all you had to do was get it repaired. You act like it’s a characteristic of the engine. No rational person gets rid of a vehicle just because it needs a repair under warranty.

I get why you may make that conclusion for yourself personally, but I don't see how you can conclude the Ram TRX is a better vehicle than Raptor for the general DD market. If you meant RAM brand beats the Ford brand, I don't see how you conclude that either.

TRX has the V8 noises and HP, and sure, that will make a lot of people happy. Others will want to pay less for very good HP, lower price, and lower fuel costs...as their DD.

As you stated, my personal opinion after owning and driving all three. I am In no way implying it’s for everyone. And Ford makes a great truck, would never knock it, other than the turbo 6 was not for me.
