Looking for thoughts on what all I should do before I tear into the heads.

2014 118k, 2 weeks out of extended warranty, history of engine overheating at 60k about 3 years ago when radiator went out. Last week, just 3 days after I changed the oil and filter noticed an oil spot of driveway by driver's front tire...

This is what I pulled out of the overflow/fill reservoir...some great chocolate shake action.

No signs of water in oil (dipstick, fill cap, or when oil filter was removed) but oil level was high on dipstick by about 1" from where I think it should have been when I changed the oil. On the coolant side the reservoir and the thermostat housing were the worst but the radiator and lower radiator hose hose had more of a mix of coolant with oil spots. Engine runs fine, no white smoke out of tail pipe.

Hoping for the simplest cause/fix I replaced the oil filter cooler. After 3 flushes (so far) it doesn't look promising (first flush was actually more clear than 2nd and 3rd...left to right)

Maybe will try a few more flushes (ran out of time tonight) and then off to compression checks and scope the cylinders. Any other ideas or tell-tale giveaways on what has failed?

Thanks in advance!

That sure doesn't look good, do you have to add oil often in 3,000 miles?
What does it smell like? Engine oil or Transmission/Power Steering oil?

Are you seeing good flow in the radiator with the cap off and engine running and hot?

Change your oil cooler again may be a bad one. . flush out system. My oil cooler leaked like that on my 2010 raptor 2002 lightning . After oil cooler is changed and it stop leaking change all your hoses out . oil softens them up and you will pop one. Hoping its not a head gasket.

Oil was a little low when I changed it but that was after ~10k miles (got a little behind schedule this time, usually every 7.5k) but previous change certainly didn’t show much oil consumption.

Definitely looks and smells like engine oil.

Good flow in the radiator.

Thanks!

I know the dealership flushed out with simple green to get all the oil out. if you have an old thermostat cut out the sping and valve and reinstall . open drain and let engine run as you feed water in and keep full that should flush clear after 15 min or so . then put a good thermostat back in

It certainly seems like I have all the symptoms of a bad cooler. Maybe I will have to figure out how to test the coolers by somehow sealing the ends of the coolant in/out and pressuring it where I can measure any changes. I tried filling the first one with water laying on its back and let it sit for an hour with no loss, but obviously it was not under any pressure so probably not a great test. Open to ideas.

Any tips on a good flush to get oil out of the system?

Have been wondering about the hoses. When I changed the oil I noticed the upper coolant hoses all looked like they were “weeping” and gooey, but the ends where they clamped onto metal where clean. Coolant wasn’t puking yet, but it did look a little discolored at the time, and spot on the cold fill level. Maybe it was just starting to leak and I just happened to catch it?

Thanks!

Another cooler would be cheaper than tearing heads off . Yes once you get oil leaking solved change all hoses out , my upper popped on me about 6 months after the oil cooler leak.

Simple Green sounds like a good idea. I had to use a degreaser to get the reservoir clean. That was a mess!

Currently flushing without a thermostat but I haven’t done a flush with the drain open and constantly filling yet. Will give that a try. Mostly been filling the radiator, starting engine with cap off, fill until it takes no more, then put cap on and run to about 110 degrees. Turn engine off, drain and repeat. Done this 3 times so far.

If your oil level is above where it should be you may have water in there. The water will often settle below the oil and you won't see it on the dipstick. Verify the level isn't high before you run it too much (water isn't very good at lubricating).

After several flushes your still pulling out milky brown?
