Afternoon,

I took a look at the threads but I still have questions. I am unsure where to start. I would like to get a radio system for the truck, unsure of where to start. I suppose the distance for transmission shoud be over 5 miles.

I have a magnetic mount antenna and just shove it out the rear center window and stick on roof when I want to use cb, which is rarely.

Rugged Radios - really the best radio supplier there is.
CB is really pretty outdated now - look into race/ham radios, much better and way greater distances.
Give them a call.

transmission and receive (tx/rx) will directly depend on location. many years ago i was in nevada with a 50 watt radio and one of our guys was heading back home to reno. we got 80 miles distance on 50watt radios. fast forward, i have a 110watt radio for a few years now. cant get more than a couple miles in some areas., yet in wyoming during our wyoming event, i can get many miles but nowhere close to the 80miles i got in nevada with the 50 watt. this is due to the terrain. nevada was flat with no hills, mountains, radio interference, etc. where wyoming we have gorges, canyons, mountains, etc. all will play a role in how much distance you can get. more than 2 miles with my 110watt in the city, forget about it. would need a repeater

Great info and I appreciate it.

Can anyone else vouch for rugged radios?

Copy all.

Rugged Radios - VHF.

My next quesiton is, what channels do folks typically run for like SOS or info channels? (Remember, I'm new at this trucking and radio life)

Get yourself a Ham radio license, I took a 1 day course and passed easily. That's saying a lot! KK6YFG
There's great software that is available in Mac or Windows to add what channels are important to where you are going.
Good YouTubes on the software as well.
Simplex, VHF, etc.

pci or die. I have had nothing but the best customer service and positive equipment experience with PCI.

110w or bust.

It is shocking how quickly a 50w runs out of tx in baja.

I'm able to Tx from the sweep truck and have the lead truck hear me clearly. If the lead truck is running 50w, I can't hear them at all. we're generally spaced out 5-10 miles, sometimes more.

Thoughts on radio mounting options/locations? Anyone have issues with the magnetic mount scratching up the roof?

Also what's the consensus with wiring, will the plug in the center console hold up or is it safest to just wire it to the battery or through the fuse box in the passenger foot well?
