Opinions on Treadlife & Noise Experienced on Toyo Open Country MT ONLY - on a Raptor

Raptor Brethren,

In a couple months, I'm going to be looking at replacing my tires for the first time on my Raptor. I've run my Nitto Ridge Grapplers for 43,000 miles with no complaints at all. Never had a bad experience with any Nitto's. I've had Terras(originals & G2's), Trails, and Ridges on my trucks, Rubicon, and the wife's Denali for well over a decade. However, I'm looking to delve into a more aggressive looking MT for the Raptor this next time around, and have been eyeing the Toyo Open Country MT now for my truck. Nitto and Toyo are sister companies, so I expect good things from both. I know the Nitto Trails are fairly good for MT's, but I think I got just under 35k miles on that 1 set, so I'm not looking to go with Trails this time.

Toyo O/C MT
- 35x12.50R20 121Q
- E-Rated
- 21/32" tread depth
- 35.0" tall inflated - You know size matters ;)
- 13.0" wide inflated - Same here.......
- 79 lbs (weight)

- 35x12.5R20 125Q
- F-rated
- 21/32" tread depth
- 34.8" tall inflated
- 12.5" wide inflated
- 79 lbs (weight)

Nitto Ridge Grapplers - (mounted since I bought my truck)
- 35x12.5R20 125Q
- F-rated
- 18/32" tread depth
- 34.76" tall inflated
- 12.52" wide inflated
- 73.47 lbs (weight)

I drive 75% Highway, 15% City, 2% Towing my 14' flatbed with RZR XP4 900, and 8% Off-Road during vacations and hunting. I rotate them religiously every 4,000 miles and they've worn well for 43,000 miles. Been great tires, but I'm reluctantly curious to try something more aggressive. They may still have 5,000 miles left in them, but I don't like to run my tires bald on an OR truck. They look small to me already with over half the tread gone.....(see pic at bottom). That deeper tread, 3/32" taller & 1/2" wider appeals to me.

I've heard Toyo MT's are good wearing, and some guys get 40,000+ miles out of them with regular rotation. I assume that's due to the deeper tread depth of 21/32" vs the lesser 18.3/32" on the Ridge Grappler.

You guys have any first-hand experience with the Toyo O/C MT's?
Anyone tried both the Ridge Grapplers and Toyo Open Country MT's and can provide a comparison between the 2?
Specifically on:
- Treadwear
- Ride of E rated vs F-rated
- Durability of 10-Ply(E) vs 12-ply(F)on the rocks(Moab/Colorado)
- and Loudness

If the Toyo MT's are even close to the Ridges, I'll give them a try. The cab of the Raptor seems pretty quiet with Ridges, given all I hear is the MBRP exhaust when I accelerate, and the music volume is at least 12 when I drive. I'm sure the Raptor suspension masks alot of stiffness in the sidewall of the 20's too which I think is great on F-rated, so E-rated must be even better, right?

I had much better luck than you did with Trail Grapplers. I got 48K miles out of a set on my 2011 FX4. I ran them again on my 2014 FX4 as well. But I got lazy and didn't rotate them regularly on the 2014 and only got 40K miles out of that set.
As long as you rotate them regularly you should be able to get 40K+ out of Toyo MTs.
The only reason I stopped running Trail Grapplers is because they are are heavier than hell and now I'm avoiding load range E's on the Raptor.

I have the Toyos. About 15k on them. They are considerably louder than the stock BFG. Almost no wet traction on pavement and I lost about 3mpg. Other than that they are great. I added a sensor to the spare and included that one in the rotation. Hoping to get 50k out of them.

Damn coachhomer, I was afraid that might be the case with the Toyo's! I guess that extra 5 lbs of additional rotational mass at each corner will make one hell of a difference. 3 mpg is alot to lose just to change to MT tires.

I only have 10K miles on the stock tires on my 2020 but I've been compiling a short list for my next set of tires. So far the only MT on my list is the load range C 35x12.5x17 General X3. They weigh about the same as the stock KO2s. They also make a load range E 315/70/17 and a load range E 35x12.5x17 but both of those weigh 12 lbs more each than the load range C 35x12.5x17.

Speaking of Toyo, what do you guys think of the ATIII? D rated, 67lbs, good warranty.

I put zero faith in Toyo’s warranty. I had the A/T II’s on my Power Wagon, and with less than 40k miles they were done. I took them to Les Schwab where they came from, and I was told I had at least 10,000 miles more on them according to Toyo’s warranty. At this point we were headed into winter, and even the tire guy said he wouldn’t run them in the snow and ice, but Toyo wouldn’t help with the warranty. Maybe if I was somewhere like Houston where it would have been mostly pavement I could have ran them, but not with snow, ice, and hunting season coming.

As you mentioned, they are not the greatest on wet pavement, but are fantastic in the dirt. Since you are only planning to spend 8% of your time in the dirt, I would opt for another choice.

Thx TXRaptor...... I guess it follows the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it....." Staying with what I know. Ridge Grapplers work well for me.

I just ordered 37” Ridge Grapplers for my SD Tremor, so I hope they are as good as everyone says... :cool:
