I agree, I'm looking at a commuter car just to keep the miles on the truck down to "social driving" and maintain it's value. Might get a smaller car for work and just rip the truck on the weekends.
I don’t get this at all. You want one vehicle to maintain value, the trade off is not enjoying what you bought.

So you spend more money on a depreciating asset, more taxes, insurance, reg, maintenance, etc. And then spend more time in a car you don’t really enjoy.

It’s a raptor, neat but honestly not that special. Drive the wheels off it and enjoy yourself. If you put 150k on it in 5 years who cares, at least you had fun.

I see the same thing with guys trying to limp into their first exotic. Drop $200k but put 600 miles a year on it because they can’t stomach the costs. If that’s the case you shouldn’t buy it, since it’s clearly way out of your comfort zone.

I’ve daily driven some ridiculous vehicles and it was all worth it. Not saving it for the next guy to enjoy.

I agree with everything you said, except the not being "special" part. That is subjective. The sports car guys that buy a Raptor because they think it will round out their stable, will be disappointed. If you have always driven a truck and finally landed on a Raptor, it is like seeing colors you've never seen before.

I work out of mine and carry tools and whatnot. There is nothing else out there that would make me happier.

I guess I have the opposite reaction to the current Raptor market. I could sell it and profit a few thousand bucks off it, but what do you do then? Virtually *any* other vehicle you replace it with will depreciate much more quickly than a Raptor, so you'd immediately 'lose' whatever money you gained from selling the Raptor.

The depreciation curve right now is making me smile because it means I don't have to worry about racking up miles or losing my ass any time I might want or need to sell it. I don't care that my '19 is worth more than I paid for it, I care that a '14 model with 100k miles is still worth almost $40k.

^^^ Exactly! I sold my 2014 Gen 1 with nearly 100k miles in the spring of 2020 for under $40k. It still had 60% of its value after 6 years. Everyone jumping shipping on the Gen 2s because their values are sky high don’t realize a year from now their Gen 2 will have nearly the same value as it does now unless you potentially have a higher mileage and/or older model year (17-18). This is why I am on my fourth Raptor. Drive it, enjoy it, then trade it in for another one :driver:

I have to laugh that 2018 is considered an "older model year".

When I first built my truck, I got lots of "OMG you take that to BAJA? it is too nice for that!".

Why else would I build it? Drive the truck, enjoy the truck. If keeping it "nice" is too daunting for you, this kind of vehicle, and in particular, the kind of hobby-driving that it is used for is not for you.

I'd daily my raptor if it didn't take me so long to prep it for Baja trips. I still take it to get coffee a couple of times a week because it's fun to drive.

If you bought a raptor and love it, why would you then buy a car that you don't like in order to torture yourself with driving the shitbox 5 out of 7 days.

sounds like self-flagellation to me.

I still miss the feeling of cruising to work in a '66 Galaxie R code. There have been others that cost a lot more, and some that cost a lot less. I'd say the R Code was probably the rarest ( 237 made and less than 30 on the registry at the time).

your raptor ain't gonna appreciate any time soon, but you'll certainly appreciate driving the vehicle that you love every day.

I get that 100% and love them. By Special I meant it’s not a limited run highly desirable vehicle that has a chance of being a collector item. Hell even the FGT barely hits that mark.

They are awesome, but it’s still essentially a production truck. Drive the wheels off it and enjoy yourself.

I had vrooom offered $55k for my 18 with 20k miles. I was debating on trading to get a ZL1 1LE, but instead got a SS 1LE. It is an absolute monster. 6.2L 455 hp/455 tq. in a 3700 lb. car. I find myself driving the Camaro more, but maybe it is just because it is new. The Raptor I don’t have to worry about potholes, curbs, or being able to transport people. The rear seats in the Camaro are just for looks.
