Has anyone figured this out? Mine does this randomly as well.
Someone has a video on here or YouTube that has the same sound. His turned out to be spark knock or detonation. He changed plugs and gap and seems to have fixed his issue. I plan to try that with mine. I have a stage 2 set up and under heavy WOT at upper RPM you can hear it.

I have just recently noticed this sound in mine. 2017 with 66k.

Did the spark plug change fix it?

I have the same sound. Dealer said they found no problems. I hoping to hear that spark plugs fixed the issue.

If it only does it in 2H and not in 4A, it is most likely related to the IWE system. Under heavy throttle at high RPM, vacuum can become depleted in the vacuum reservoir due to a faulty check valve or vacuum leak. This results in the front hubs partially engaging, which can create a variety of noises.

For diagnosis, you can remove the hub vacuum supply line at the solenoid, which will engage the IWEs. If the noise no longer occurs in 2WD, you’ve confirmed the source.

Mine also does this only in 2H and not in 4A, anyone figure it out?
just like @FordTechOne previously suggested, it’s likely the IWE vacuum drop. Try his workaround above, and if no noise in 2h, start with replacing the very inexpensive IWE check valve.

For those that hear it, Have you disabled the fake engine noise? My 2017 made the noise and my 2019 did not, until i disabled the fake engine noise. I think most folks wont hear it if not disabled. I was able to get the same noise in same gear range on deceleration. Always 3rd gear and sometimes 2nd. My guess is that its just noise from the 4a wet multiplate clutch and how the spinning fluid can make the front shaft turn while in 2wd. So for me, I think its just a regular noise.

Good observation. As you mention, the Transfer Case is never completely disengaged from the front axle. There is always some drag that can cause the front components to turn in 2WD, which is normal.
