Dropping Fords new 7.3L in a Gen 1

It’s stories like this that make me want to go carbureted lol

and thus why I'm been contemplating going LS/albins/motec, and rewiring the what electronics that I want to keep. I'd also have to go to hydro steering ( most likely swingset) and a traditional booster/master cylinder.

I guess my point is, motor swaps in any gen 2 are pricey and complicated. No one will sell a DIYer the harness and programming for a 5.0 or 7.3 swap alone. They all insist on doing all of the work for you and will not do the swap with anything other than a factory ford crate motor.

I have no interest in that, So I'll just have to work with some aftermarket companies and shops to make it happen the way I want it.

Or, Buy a wrecked truck and legit swap just about EVERYTHING over into my raptor for it.

Word to the wise ladies and gents, Gen1s will ALWAYS be easier to modify heavily.

The Gen2s are great as long as you

A. Don't drive hard enough for a cage

B. Don't plan to progress beyond a certain point with suspension mods

C. Don't have any intention of swapping drivetrains.

If A, B or C tickle your fancy, start with something that isn't a gen 2 raptor, unless you hate your bank account.

That’s my thought on the next truck is to grab a 150 with the 5.0 and “just” swap out everything else around it.

but I didn’t know what trim I should go with. from what you describe above in regards to something as simple as seats. Maybe I’ll go with an xlt and try to avoid as much ford tech as possible

whatever the lowest trim is with a 5.0. Hell, I'd get windows with a hand crank if I could.

You wont need a stereo or sync (VHF, Intercom & a lowrance) , Wont need the seats ( cage, race seats, harnesses) , wont need a sunroof ( wont fit with a cage and it'll break), don't need "modes" ( just work on the driver mod), wont use the fenders or bedsides, you'll throw out the rear axle, you wont use the bed, and you don't care about the grill/trim because you'll most likely go with a one-piece front end and bedsides on supports.

Gas tank size doesn't matter ( fuel cell) .

And ultimately, I can't wait to put the sticker that I bought for my truck on the back window once it is done.

Yes all of this...and will still be my daily driver haha

May as well buy a single cab long bed to shave weight and then shorten the frame to accept the aftermarket bed sides.


This sounds better and better.

Shoot, why even buy a truck..just grab a cab from the junk yard and a cage with frame rails... lol
