On the hunt for a replacement truck, as many may be aware inventories are tight right now - I really don't want to get something used unless its a great deal b/c even slightly used lower mileage (15-35k) are basically selling for near-new pricing but w/o the new car smell or full warranty or lower interest rates.

I have looked quite a lot for a replacement Raptor & I don't really want or need a fully loaded up one, & every time I say "F it" & try to make some deals on the ones in that price range either a) they get sold before I have time do anything, b) the dealer has taken it upon themselves to destroy the truck by adding a rocky ridge lift package (literally found 5 like this), or c) they want anywhere from $3-$5k markup on top of MSRP

My "fall back" plan to save some cash would be to get a decently optioned Ram or Chevy w/ 6.2 & work a deal seems like you can get more incentives w/ them since Ford just did their redesign on the F150 (and I have no interest in a standard F150) - but that would just be a "stop gap" measure for me to wait & see if something that really grabs my attention (like a new Raptor or TRX) comes out.

I did find a lower tier optioned "801a mid" w/ leather in lead foot that I could get for like $1000 off MSRP & throwing in a rollup tonneau- would be $64k +ttl, in comparison to my 2018 801 that stickered just slightly higher I would be giving up a pano roof (don't really care), nav (has 8' sync screen & wifi so not big deal), the tailgate step, remote start on key & the bed lights. The tailgate step & bed lights I liked.....I'd be "gaining" a better color (Lead foot > black), live valve shocks, torsen front diff, wifi hot spot, & trailer brake control. I can remote start through the app so that's OK.

Since I didn't like the idea of not getting a "good deal" on a Raptor & having to give up a little bit of options I opted at looking at F250's & Ram 2500's. I basically disregarded the F250 w/ the 7.3, assuming it was underpowered (it is) - but I did test drive a Tremor w/ the 7.3 & a well equipped Lariat w/ the diesel. The Tremor w/ 7.3 def felt lighter, easier to maneuver, sounded OK w/ stock exhaust, & handled better (may be due to suspension too) - but while I don't even tow heavy, I can imagine w/ my 2 boys, 80 lb dobie, wife, all their crap, a bed full of nonsense & 2 jet skis in tow it would be simply adequate & working all the time - also I think the gas mileage would be abysmal

The Powerstroke? HOLY HELL DOES IT HAVE ALL THE POWER!!!! TOO much power almost? Not usable when unladen in 2wd for the first few gears, just get wheel slippage, w/o having a 4A or AWD mode like the Raptor I feel like this could get old fast despite how awesome it is to simply feel all the power on tap, if you stomp on it you BETTER be pointed straight & have plenty of runway to bring it back down to speed.

The ride on the SD trucks - diesel or gas tremor or Lariat/XLT was SIGNIFICANTLY better than I expected/remembered from previous experience w/ HD trucks. I have no issue w/ it whatsoever. That being said - nothing holds a candle to the Ram trucks 1/2 ton or otherwise - they have the best ride & the most luxury hands down. If they offered the 6.4 N/A Hemi w/ 485hp in the 1/2 ton Rebel or whatever - I'd probably go that route, but the 5.7 is too tame compared to the 6.2 GMs & the 3.5 EB - the Ram 2500 Cummins is pretty awesome, but the whole thing is a mish/mash combo of 4th & 5th gen updates, & doing some research found out that in 2021 the Ram HD trucks will get the rest of the full redesign - one of which being a real Allison transmission or (possibly an Aisin?) - either way, a Cummins is great but not paired to a Chrysler built 6 speed.....reliability would be a concern & its down @ least 2 if not 4 cogs compared to modern standards now set by Ford/GM

Long rant - those are my thoughts - any last advise or experience owning a Tremor and/or Ford Powerstroke??

I could really see the diesel growing on me despite the fact that I ABSOLUTELY don't need it.....on other hand I def don't need a Raptor & most people on this forum would be fine w/ a Tacoma too so don't lie!!!!

What are you trying to do with this new truck purchase? You own a Raptor. Was it bought because you wanted the off-road capability? Why the sudden impetus to change?

Damn, you have a lot going on. Refresh me, what happened to your Raptor?

I’d definitely consider a power stroke Tremor if my Raptor burst into a big ball of flame. An AT4 GMC with the 6.2 would work in a pinch too for the right price. They are good looking trucks with great engines.

Our current pickup trucks are the ‘18 Raptor and a used ‘16 F250 4x4 w/6.7 PSD which we recently purchased for a specific purpose.

The primary mission of our F250 is to pull our RV—and then allow us to cruise around. Great truck for that purpose.

Obviously, our F250 is not a Tremor—but I believe the F250 platform regardless of how engineered—is a completly different animal in every way from the F150 platform.

My .02:

-Unloaded, ride quality of our F250 when empty is relatively punishing vs. the Raptor.
-Solid front axle vs IFS, night and day.
-If indoor garage parking the Raptor is an issue—the Super Duty may be tough to park in many attached home garages (we park ours in a separate garage that houses RV). Our Raptor fits fine in our attached garage—with about 2 feet of clearance (1 ft front/1 ft rear).

If we didn’t need a truck to pull an RV and didn’t have a separate indoor garage that fit the Super Duty—not happening. Personally, leaving an expensive truck in the elements—is not wise, unless you don’t care.

Candidly, drive the Tremor as much as you can—form your own opinion.

I do not believe there are enough words to describe the differences between any F250 platform vs F150 platform.

Good luck!

As a disclaimer, nobody on this forum should be "fine" with a Tacoma; it's the prius of pickups and it has about the same level of usefulness and utility, which is to say zero.

It sounds like you really liked the Powerstroke F-250; have you driven the Tremor version? The additional size, weight, and width of the tires may be helpful with putting down all of that power and torque. I'm surprised the 7.3 felt so underpowered; I figured 430HP would be more than adequate for that application. I agree that it is incredible how well the new HD trucks ride; it wasn't long ago that F-250s were riding on an open c-channel frame with leaf springs both front and rear.

The Chrysler 6 speed used in the RAM is the 68RFE; it's a 20 year old proven design and has shown to be plenty strong behind the 6.7 Cummins, so unless you're planning on modding it for big power, it should be just fine. That said, I agree that the RAM HD is due to be replaced with a new version, the minor refresh is just a stop gap.

The 6.2 in the GM twins is a strong and efficient engine, and it's paired to the same 10 speed transmission used in the F-150/Raptor. The only differences are the calibrations and manufacturing plants. The only downside is the interiors, for some reason GM continues to drop the ball on interior design and functionality compared with Ford and RAM.

raptor totaled- different thread on that, millennial paying more attention to cell phone than red lights

had many GM trucks previous, I think they’re basically like “ok” @ everything, do have the best V8 for sure, but had issues w/ the K2 gen trucks & left a bad taste in my mouth

rams have best interior/luxury/ride

ford seems to have the most options/flavors & the best diesel powertrain (until Ram mates that Cummins to an Allison next year)

I’m not sure what the secret sauce is- but NONE of the 1/2 tons out there handle as good, pull as hard, or as fun to drive on or offroad as a Raptor!!! Kills me to just make a deal quick out of necessity, but in reality i probably wouldn’t buy a first model year gen 3 Raptor anyhow, & if it comes as a 2022 & I’m waiting until 2023 earliest to consider one, then it’ll be 2.5-3 years before that would be an option for me in reality

I agree with your points; however, it is important to note that the F-Super Duty went through a full redesign in 2017. It was all-new from the ground up, and the improvements in NVH, ride quality, rigidity, suspension, interior design, and drivability cannot be understated. As capable as the 2016 Super Duty is, it was still riding on the same platform from 1999, which to say the least can be a little rough over anything but smooth roads.

Why not a used truck for a little then? If you loved the raptor get a 17-18 for 55ish and ride it out a couple years.
