My yearly state inspection was due up this month, so I decided to take the truck (2018) in to have it done, get the oil changed, fix an inoperable sunroof, and I figured I'd mention the subtle rattle on cold startup to the service advisor.

Honestly, I'd listened to some of the other videos posted with the cam rattle and I didn't think it sounded the same, but I figured there was no harm in mentioning it. It resulted in me having to leave the truck overnight so they could do a cold start. Well, I just received a call from the service advisor and sure enough they are replacing them.

Out of curiosity for those that are more in the know than I. Is this a permanent fix or is it possible that the replacements can also go bad eventually?

I dunno....seems like EVERY truck is bound to have this “issue” at some point or another, & also seems like there have been several members who have posted on here who have the cam phaser TSB “fix” only to have it come back.

personally I got 34k on my 2018 started making that rattle on cold start maybe 10k miles ago & I don’t plan on doing sh*t unless it effects performance- which from what I have surmised thus far it doesn’t.

I'm not sure what I'm listening for but I'm hearing a pretty subtle rattle on cold starts (2018 w/ 34k). I think it's been there for a while and just figured it's normal cold engine startup noise. How subtle is the phaser rattle? From reading other posts I expected it was very pronounced.

Mine was very subtle as well and went away after about 10 seconds of idle time. It sounded nothing like some of the more pronounced sound I'd heard in other clips. Right or wrong, I wouldn't have taken it in for that solely, but as I had it in the shop anyway I figured why not mention it.

Hmmmmm... Decisions decisions. I'm just about to run out or warranty so now would be the time if I'm going to get it fixed. But if it doesn't affect performance and is very subtle I don't know if I want to go to the trouble. My dealer also isn't very Raptor-oriented. Not many in my region and I've never even seen one on their lot.

If it was me, I'd get it taken care of under warranty. I could be confusing it with something else but I think it costs $2K'ish or so. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, having it done for free is the way to go

I’m in the same boat just stated getting rattles on cold start ups but not every cold start. (Late 2018 build 14,000 miles).

Can someone remind me what the issue is technically referred to (other than "the cam phaser issue")? My dealer being Raptor-dumb, I want to be able to tell them exactly what I think is up when I set up service.

I called around some dealers in MA see if they “knew” about the problem- so many of em are clueless as hell or straight up liars it scares the crap outta me! 1/2 the dealers/service depts I called said they’d “never heard of that problem” - which is ridiculous considering how common it is over multiple vehicles, the other ones acted like it was something else potentially.

what you wanna find out in the very least is whether or not they can perform the TSB fix w/o removing the cab from frame- b/c my experience has been very disappointing w/ Ford as far as their service depts go, I can only imagine what they could screw up going that route to fix it
