Finally got a no BS answer from the senior tech.

So apparently a communication wire was faulty in the wiring harness from the module behind the glove box to the PCM.

The PCM was never “fried” it was just this wire that was mis diagnosed. I think that when the stereo shop was messing with the plug they pulled a pin loose from the plug.

Which is exactly why they couldn't program the replacement PCM. There was no "Ford system" problem, the issue was their lack of a proper diagnosis. The Pinpoint test for a loss of PCM communication has the tech check the communication circuits between the PCM and the rest of the network. Clearly, they didn't bother performing the pinpoint test, and instead threw a PCM at it. A simple network test would have shown that both the original and replacement PCM weren't communicating.

At least they came clean on their screw up.

Sounds like you solved your problem was going to say I bet it's just a loose wire somewhere because I had the exact same errors/issues with my truck and it was a loose grounding cable at the back of the engine bay (my fault for not resecuring the ground tight enough after wiring lights).
