Turbosmart BOV - coincidental engine issue? —FIXED—

Hey everyone,

I have searched for a couple days now trying to find information about this and have talked to Turbosmart themselves and I’m getting nowhere. I spoke to them on the phone and the guy was confused and stated this hasn’t happened, but thought that this might be compressor surge. After I sent videos of it actively doing all this, they said they could look at the valve and replace it if needed or do a refund. But there is now more to the problem as I will explain. I saw somebody had a similar issue but there was no follow up about any resolution so I’m putting this out publicly.

2018 Shelby Baja Raptor, all stock, 18k miles, just added the Vee Port EM BOV. Install was fine, everything tight and correct. It worked fantastic for a few days but then problems came. At first it would flutter and rapidly discharge at low RPM and low load while sometimes rattling (I installed it with the bracket and Loctite on the fasteners and checked that all was well), and that later progressed to a worsening engine shudder which you could feel at your feet. At the very worst, it would buck the engine hard enough as if it snapped motor mounts. It would then do it in manual shifting and any rpm, but not full throttle.

I removed the BOV and put it back to stock where it now also does all that behavior just as bad.

This is not 100% of the time, but it will do it and the fact that it does it now with the stock valve back in place, has me concerned that there is damage caused by this BOV.

I’m not new to cars, but I’ve never seen a car do this. The closest I’ve seen happen is a POS BMW 335 with a bad tuner on it choking from boost under load. The Raptor did it at low load and low boost though.

Any ideas? Also I did check the connector and it has the correct connector for the BOV, not like that bad batch from earlier this year. I’m going to test this BOV on a standard F150 ecoboost and see how it behaves.

Probably need Tuning again after the mod.
When you returned it back to the OEM BOV, did you do a battery disconnect to force the PCM to start a clean learning cycle?

i would send that back and get a replacement.

I don't have the EM version but i have the original and it's been flawless since i originally installed it.

I have not done that, wouldn’t have thought the PCM would need to learn an on-off function but I’ll give it a shot?

I will very likely be sending it back, but that doesn’t fix the current issue with the truck. I’m also thinking a tune issue like the guy above mentioned but that seems like a reach? Is your truck a Shelby? I haven’t found any info from someone with a Shelby that’s running one.

Man that almost sounds like the IWE bad or are you talking about all the hissing Im hearing?

Hearing that hiss sounds like a boost leak? I put a turbo smart bov on my Cummins. I don’t know which one you got but mine had a rubber o-ring at the base between the bov and the flange. It tore instantly when I put it in the first time. But ace hardware had same size replacements. Could have sucked some o-ring into the engine, tho that’s a stretch?

the hissing is the valve discharging (I think) but also the rattling is pretty pronounced. I’ll have to look up that IWE. Seems to me like the PCM is opening the valve when it should be regulated by the wastegates only instead of discharging through the BOV/BPV all the time. It will shake the entire engine when it’s really bad from the shuddering, kind of like rapid boost or fuel cut is happening. Frustrating!

yeah, these use a totally different fitting style and it’s doing it on both BOV setups. They installed just fine.

You can rule out the IWE by selecting 4a and retesting. if the rattle goes away, it’s the IWE system.

I think you guys might be onto something with this... My friend did say that it feels like the car was hopping between 2 and 4WD rapidly.
Will test and report back. I really hope this is the case!
I need to find some info on the vacuum routing so I can see if maybe a line got popped off or a check valve failed if the IWE is acting up, just to check that off the list. I have a sneaking suspicion that all this is just coincidental timing with the BOV install timing. Fingers crossed!
