The owners manual calls for Motorcraft 5w30 and a FL500-S filter. That's what I am using today at my first change at 1,700 miles. I don't put a ton of miles on my trucks and usual change the oil at 3,500 at the most. There is nothing wrong with using the oil and filter specified by the manufacture. I almost had a local guy drop by 6 quarts of Amsoil and a filter last night, but figured it was not worth 3x the price especially when I change the oil frequently.

I am more **** on my sports cars with oil changes, but I'm just going to do the Ford full synthetic on a 10k oil change interval and monitor oil level and add as needed. First 6k miles, I lost 2-3 quarts. Second oil change (from 6,200 miles to 16,200 miles roughly) I consumed less than a quart. I'm good with that.

I also have a 8yr/125k mile Flood Ford full extended warranty, so if the engine decides to blow, Ford will put a new engine in for me since I'm following the factory recommended change interval.

Factory interval is 7500-10000 miles under “normal” driving. The large majority of vehicles are fall under the “severe” conditions interval, which is 5000-7500 miles and includes off-road use, hilly roads, moderate to heavy towing or hauling, extended idling, or extended hot or cold operation.

FTO, I usually love your responses and glad you take the time to respond, but...

How can the "large majority" of vehicles NOT fall under the "normal" condition?

Thats the definition of normal! Whatever the large majority does.

(And by the way, I do Ford's synthetic blend every 5k miles for $39 at the dealer)

Mobil 1 every 5k. I think I'm using whatever their "truck" formulation of 5w30 is
Mobil 1 Filter every 10k.
Just changed my air filter at 25k.

I'll also pile on the Fumoto drain train. Totally worth it.

Use any oil that meets the Ford API spec, and a Ford filter changed at the recommend OCI. That is all you need. Everything else is wasted money. Ford's do not have oiling issues that other makes have had. Trick oil and filters are not needed.

I do everything at 5K OCIs simply because it's easy to remember. 50K, 55K, 60K etc. The one exception is my daily driver at the recommend 7500 OCI change since it nearly all highway driving. You know, "normal" driving. Will save me 7 oil changes over 100K doing it at 7500 OCI instead of 5000 OCI. $200+ in my pocket and all of the saved effort.
