I had a Tepui RTT on my trailer when I had my Gen 1. Great tent, quality made, never had any issues.

I was heading down the iKamper / Tepui RTT path but wanted to be able to set up camp and take the Raptor out without packing up. I started looking at small trailers with a rack but ultimately ended up with an Opus 4 since it was better for a family with 2 small kids.

This is what I get caught up on. $2k for the Diamondback, $500+ for Frontrunner bars and $1k+ for a bedslide. At $3500 it's about the same of an RSI Smart Cap.

I had an MX4 previously and loved it, but I sold it since I needed more storage and it wouldn't work with a rack. I bought a Retrax XR and was planning on adding a Frontrunner Slimline rack but I don't really like the lost bed space and definitely not the leaks. Now I debate if I should go back to the MX4 for daily driving and replace it with a Smart Cap when camping, or, go with the Diamondback + bars and a Frontrunner rack on the roof instead.

I know it's all a matter of preference, but would you do anything differently in hindsight?

No setup is perfect but we are pretty happy with ours. We are always trying to make things easier and more comfortable so that we maximize our time and enjoyment out camping, otherwise we find excuses not to go. Sometimes I wish we had a little more space, but that's probably because we overpack and bring more luxuries or recovery gear than really needed.

The Smart Cap is new to me but does look awesome... and of course I would option it up well beyond $3500 ; ) I wish it was aluminum instead of SS though. The extra space and organization would be a nice luxury, but at the moment I don't really need it, I don't want to invest the extra money, and it would make everything harder having the tent that high up.

Right now I'd rather spend that money on shocks/springs, it's sitting down a little in the rear when fully loaded for several days in the backcountry. Which happens to be another reason I've avoided a cap so far, the diamondback is a little heavy but still 100 pounds or so less than a fiberglass topper. tent + diamondback + bedslide + gear/food/water for 3 days is already over 550 pounds.

OK, now that is not even a real tent. No less than for a Raptor. Turn in your truck keys please.
I don't know, there are big advantages in simplicity and light weight. I might have gone this way, at least to get started, if my wife was interested in a little more rugged camping.

I have the FrontRunner/ Retrax XR /CVT combo and love it, but its really not much faster to set up then a ground tent. If you really are worried about using your bed just get the bed cover you want and pick up a get a Shift Pod (https://shiftpod.com/shiftpod/) Its about as fast to set up.

If I was going to spend a little more money I would have sucked it up and bought a ATHabitat which I still might upgrade to later on.

Or put your RTT on the truck roof and use the bed as much as you need. I've seen a couple F150s set up like that.

Modern tents are pretty easy to setup so I agree it's not too much faster with a RTT, the bigger win for me is having the mattress and bedding already in place so I don't have inflate an air mattress or whatever. Obviously not a big deal if you are just throwing a couple sleeping bags in a tent.
