Make sure and document everything, time in shop, cost, etc. May need that in case it ends up being a lemon (also research lemon laws in your area).

I agreed, buying a new vehicle is like a box of chocolate, you'll never know what you'll get when you buy one, at lease that was F. Gump said. I had a 2006 Tacoma with 190,000 miles on it and nothing but regular service. Trade it in for a 2013 Tacoma and had nothing but problems, then trade that in for a 2016 Tacoma and that had problems. Now I got my '17 with 15k miles and no problems. Just let the dealer deal with it and enjoy your truck when you get it back.

Update on my original post....

So the service advisor just called me. I will try to convey what he said as best I can.

He says upon tearing down my transmission that the tech did not find any metal shavings. There were some "hot spots" on some of the clutches apparently. At this point they intend to replace the Torque converter, clutches, and valve body. He offered me a loaner of some sort, but I really don't need it as I have another car I can drive. He thinks the initial cause had to do with the torque converter. Remember I have only talked to the service advisor and not a tech of any sort.

Not sure this is useful to anyone, but that's the scoop so far. Any feedback or thoughts are always welcome.

I'd never listen to a Service Advisor, there may be some out there that care and know what their talking about but I'd always try to talk to the tech. to get good information.

If he’s good, you got the details and it sounds plausible for sure. Check your ro when you get it back and check the part numbers.

sounds like it’s not a big deal at all. Just bad part and they fix is pretty straightforward.

Be glad that they are replacing the torque converter. Once any metal gets inside it is nearly impossible to flush them clean. With what they are replacing you are essentially getting a rebuilt transmission. If there is no hard part damage (drums, shafts, sun gears, etc) they would all be reused in a full rebuild. What's left is the clutches/steels, gaskets/seals, and the converter.

Looks like it ran low on oil and trashed the lower end bearings. From the photos, it certainly wasn't a mall crawler...

139K hard miles on a dairy farm. The tech said he suspected it ingested water and bent the crank, it was only the middle bearings that were trashed. The owner ended up trading it after they got into the motor.
