I’ve got a truck built on 3/19, with the whistle/whine, would this repair apply to mine or is it a different fix?

This TSB would not apply, since you're out of the build date range.

Does this sound like your concern?

SSM 48690 - 2017-2020 Various Vehicles – 10R80 Automatic Transmission – Whine Noise From Bellhousing/Front Of Transmission Fluid Pan At Idle And/Or While Driving
Some 2017-2020 Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with a 10R80 transmission mayexhibit a whine noise at idle and/or while driving. This may be identified as coming from the bell housing and the front of the transmission fluid pan. The whine noise may become louder when the transmission is at operating temperature andmay increase with engine RPM in the PARK position. A small amount of whine noise is considered to be characteristic of the 10R80 transmission due to the offsetgear drivetrain in the front support and has no effect on durability.

I should have referenced this one. My dealer has had these parts in order since early May and they arrived last week. My truck goes in Monday .

TSB has been released for those with affected trucks:

No, I should have referenced this one you posted . My parts have been in order since April have just arrived . Mine will go in Monday .

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 20-2083
10R80 Transmission – High-Pitched Whine Noise - Built On 21-Oct-2019 And Through 16-Dec-2019 20-2083
16 March 2020

Model:

Ford
2020 F-150
Transmission/Transaxle: (10R80)
2020 Mustang
Transmission/Transaxle: (10R80)

Transmission/Transaxle: (10R80)

Issue: Some 2020 F-150/Mustang/Ranger vehicles equipped with a 10R80 transmission and built on 21-Oct-2019 and through 16-Dec-2019 may exhibit a high-pitched whine noise coming from the transmission at low speeds during light acceleration or coasting. This may be due to the outer output shaft bearing. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the transmission inner output shaft bearing, fluid passage sleeve and outer output shaft bearing.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:

• 2020 F-150/Mustang/Ranger

Repair/Claim Coding

Causal Part: 7A415
Condition Code: D4

Service Procedure

1. Isolate the high-pitched whine noise condition by road testing the vehicle at normal operating temperature, use the Automatic Transmission Select Shift feature to select and hold 3rd gear while driving on flat ground. The high-pitched whine noise peaks at speeds between 30-40 km/h (18-25 mph) during light acceleration and while coasting down in 3rd gear. The high-pitched whine noise goes away when in NEUTRAL.

2. Is the high-pitched whine noise present?

(1). Yes - proceed to Step 3.

(2). No - this article does not apply. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 100-04 for normal diagnosis.

3. Remove the transmission. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01.

4. Disassemble transmission, perform only the necessary steps to remove the output shaft and planetary carrier No. 4 assembly from the transmission case. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01 > Overhaul.

(1). It is only necessary to remove the following:

• torque converter

• transmission fluid auxiliary pump

• main control assembly

• all four speed sensors (intermediate speed A sensor, intermediate speed B sensor, turbine shaft speed sensor and output shaft speed sensor)

• fluid pump

• output shaft seal

• front support

• clutch and planetary assembly

• output shaft and planetary carrier No. 4 assembly

5. Remove the inner output shaft bearing, fluid passage sleeve and outer output shaft bearing from the transmission case. It is not necessary to remove any other parts except for the bearings and passage sleeve. Refer to WSM Section 307-01 > Disassembly.

6. Install new inner output shaft bearing, fluid passage sleeve and outer output shaft bearing into the transmission case. Refer to WSM Section 307-01 > Assembly.

7. To reassemble, reverse the removal procedure. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01 > Overhaul.

8. Install the transmission. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01.

So I'm in the bad build date period. Is this something that requires burn in for the issues to present itself? I have around 6k miles on the truck.

@TRMFAM you have the issue fixed yet?

If you have 6k miles and no noise concern it’s highly unlikely your truck is affected by the issue. Not every vehicle within the build date range will have the issue; that is simply the date range that a vehicle may have received a suspect part. Most of the affected ones seem to exhibit the noise even when new.

Gotcha! Honestly I haven't really "tried" to hear it. Usually have the music up or there are kids in the truck so It's hard to hear things.

I just bought a 2020 f150 Lariat and thought I would let you all know about my experience with this problem. I took the truck home overnight before I bought it to show my wife. The next morning I drove it early and noticed the driveline whistle. I did some internet research and found this discussion. I told the dealer about it and they agreed to fix the problem as part of the transaction. Yesterday they had the truck, looked into the whistle, and ordered a new transmission. If all goes well I will have a good truck with a good trannie and no whistle! I credit this forum for providing good information.

As i said before, my Raptor has had this whistle since mile#1. I waited until my first oil change to bring up the condition, which they easily reproduced. It is currently at the Service Center getting a new transmission and I am in a loaner vehicle for a couple days. I will update further when i get the truck back.
