more Whipple woes lmao, actually this isn't that bad but just giving info to anyone down the road.
my truck started making a super loud noise like a giant throttle body was on a mega phone. called JDM asked them called Whipple asked them no-one had a clue. tore it off sent to Whipple. advise never send anything to Whipple without asking time lines. they got the supercharger and a week goes by and no info at all. I figured ok its only a week maybe they have that many warranty returns? 2nd week and still not even a hey its this part and will take 4 more days NOTHING. then I emailed the guy asking why did I send it in if it would just sit for 2 weeks I could of waited or got truck home out of my buddy shop. anyways 2 days later its in the mail fixed under warranty. It was the jack shaft I assume the bearings but no clue they just said we replaced the jack shaft. the guy that helped me is prob the guy we all use here and seemed honest and truthful about the whole thing so I can't be to upset. I ended up waiting another 2 days for some new Raptor retrofit lights anyways. Now that is something I can say was easy and he informed me of everything. it takes forever to ship but but his work and product is top notch so far.
I have been looking at moving to Boise for a while now. you can buy a mansion on the lake for the same cost as my house here and its real America not this weird shit my state is turning into. anyways if I do I will be looking at going even smaller pulley as there is better octain there. if that happens I might swap back to the Whipple TB and find a whole new tuner anyways. there is def a difference in the ford and Whipple TB

I have the gen 2 stage 3 whipple set up on my 2014. It seemed pretty mellow and had a weird surging issue so I drove down to whipple and gave them my truck explained these issues and a few others. Tuner did his thing and sent me home.
Truck def had more power (advanced timing) but shifting was nasty it stayed in first gear for ever and I swear it felt like 30seconds (IN my limited knowledge this is what will blow oil gears. I know you sheep have your ideas) the truck would also clunk about 4-5mph if going slow. I actually made the truck stop shifting had to turn off in the middle of traffic. After that I never drove the truck hard again and called whipple. The tuner said it is what it is nothing we can do.
Lmao yea right I called JDM and talked to Jim Jr. He wanted me use the ford TB 78lb injectors and his tune. I had the TB already so bought the injectors and tune and waited.
Just installed it all and the story’s you read are all legit the shifting is exactly what’s it’s supposed to be like and no more surging.

My advice to anyone going whipple route don’t buy their TB and don’t even waste your time with their tune just call JDM I wouldn’t doubt a few HP is lost from the TB but drivability is way more important then 5hp for a daily driver truck.

I typed all this out on my phone and I can’t spell so if there’s mistake my bad.

an actual DYNO tune will produce the absolute best results.
The whipple tune is a one size fits all. A email tune is a step above that “best guess tune” absolutely nothing can replace a dyno tune. To say otherwise is simply idiotic. Why spend all that money on a best guess?

Find a tuner local to you. Fire up the Dyno!

Since this is a thread from 2018 that I accidentally revived... SORRY Guys

I will jump on that comment, and give you something to think about Anthony.

I have a very well mannered, easy to drive JDM tune on my Roush that is my daily driver. 117,000 miles and counting, SC since day 1 and still kicking ass!!

I have a friend that has a business of building high end turbo cars and has some of the fastest LS based Corvettes here in south Texas.
They had been giving me a hard time about what wheel HP my truck made one time, and they wanted to see it for themselves. It put down 507HP at the tire on a 37. Pretty stout
I took the JDM "best guess" tune out, and laid the stock Roush back in so he could play around. He was able to make 20hp over the JDM in the middle of the curve and 7 more at peak.
Pretty impressive I have to say.

Guess what tune I run??? The JDM...

The custom tune is miserable on the street. Fantastic if we are WFO all the time but it has terrible driveability. The tuner even agreed that he would need a day of driving around data logging it to get it anywhere as good as the JDM tune. The changes JDM made to the transmission was not easily duplicated by the other tuner.

So while it is true you can make more with a custom tune, that doesn't necessarily make it better than a well sorted tune from JDM or others.
Some people dont have access to a good tuner, or dont want to spend a day to try and get 5hp.. Its a 6000lb truck, you wont notice...

I've had the same conversation multiple times with Anthony K. and others.
The email Tunes from real Tuners are not canned Tunes or Best Guess tunes.
They are "Safe" custom designed Dyno Tunes to the mods you have,
with the added support of feed back from thousands of owners on what works well and what needs tweaking.

Whipple, Roush, JDM and Livernois will never max out the fuel trim if they do not have the vehicle in front of them on a Dyno.
Not one of their Tunes blew up an engine, they all have a reputation to uphold.
