The Evo and S4 have symmetrical sized axle shafts as well. Even though on the Evo, they don’t come out on the vehicle centerline, they have an intermediate driveshaft so that there is no torque steer. In fact, I’m not aware of any performance AWD vehicles with unsymmetrically sized axle shafts.... Subaru is very skilled at marketing though to make you think your AWD system is special and something only Subaru can provide.


Gee our trucks these very raptors have front differentials and drive shafts that are not the same size. So does the Focus RS with its Rear drive unit stolen from the Evoque. Colorado is a hot bed for subaru with lots of models there bringing premiums. Don't know what your issues with the brand are but I don't share your views.

Audis AWD is the closest to Subaru there is on the Quattro line to STI. I am not familiar with the EVO as they have not been in production now for 10 years and mitsubishi makes kei cars now.

Subaru makes a GREAT economy car. Even the SVX was a good car. All the problems arise when you try to make it a sports car with a turbo.

Well since we have POPO hijacked this thread all up, why not explain it to you. The STI is a separate model from the Impreza while it was based upon the original Impreza line up it dropped the name with this model introduction. The RS is a Focus like the EVO is a Lancer both of which are based upon FWD econ box cars. So, in essence when you buy a Focus RS or a Lancer EVO you are getting the basic setup as the 10 grand Focus or Lancer with a bunch of different parts on it. I grew up with the same basic Mitsu engine which is in that EVO as it basically is the same design as the first and second generation Mitsu Eclipse cars which I owned several of and including a 3000GT.

I love the STI because it is fun to drive super reliable in stock form. I have owned a sr20det swapped 240sx which made 360 whp and was a high 10 second quarter car. The STI is not this fast and probably could not be made that way without 400+ whp and some serious rework on the engine block. For some reason you probably remember all the issues with Subaru which is different than my experience with the brand. So, while I maintain my own vehicle and do most all maintenance work on it, I have not experienced any of those design defects that you complained about.

Subaru Rally Team USA includes drivers Scott Speed and Travis Pastrana which compete in a full rally team season in the USA. Also, Vermont Rally Car has used their designs for decades and they could have selected any chassis to develop. The simple matter is that the Subaru STI is the most successful and longest running rally car of all time.

Where is Mitsubishi on the EVO? Bankrupt selling nameplates from the 90s.

Where is Ford Performance on the RS? Dead no more RS.

I think you’re trying to make a point here but I’m not sure what it is... Yes, the Evo is based on the lancer which is how you get such an expensive power train at such a low price point... Last I checked the STI shared most parts with the Impreza, not that it’s a bad thing.

You are experiencing these design shortcomings every time you get in the car with suboptimal performance whether you are aware of it or not calibrated enough to be. Try not to be threatened by the truth.

As I’ve said before, Subaru is very skilled at marketing. They throw cars at everyone in rally hoping someone will win with their name on it, and they usually do. I applaud Subaru for being so involved, but it’s not exactly an indicator of performance.

And the point you’re trying to make here is what? That good cars don’t get cancelled?


As you’ve said, your STI might be an alright car for you at stock power levels. It’s probably more practical than the Evo in a few ways too. I am more concerned with HP and have found the Evo to be very reliable at 400AWHP on stock internals and this is largely what convinced me to go this direction.

I love how the only things you bring up are Subaru marketing propaganda and no substantive facts. If they had a fast car, they should have raced it where it could be compared with many other cars as a benchmark. Cars are normally faster than bikes... don’t know why Subaru wasn’t.

But we know what they say about opinions so let’s stick to the technical facts about why it’s a terrible design.
  • Boxer engines create a lot of complexity for little/no benefit. For example, there is twice as many cam shafts which mean twice as many actuators for VVT, twice as many head gaskets (which are know to fail and repair requires REMOVING the engine) twice as many cam seals. All of this more or less equates to twice as many problems
  • The cylinder is flat meaning getting an even oil distribution is difficult/impossible.
  • The turbocharger cannot be located near the exhaust ports meaning you must run a smaller turbine wheel to get decent spool. Smaller turbine wheels lead to higher EGT’s which create a ton of problems (don’t ask me how I know). This is why for a long time, the STI despite having 25% more displacement actually had a smaller turbo than the Evo.
  • The exhaust routing makes equal length headers more difficult making twin scroll less/not effective
  • The entire engine is cantilevered in front of the front wheels! Mass ahead of the front wheels REDUCES the weight measured at the rear wheels. This is already a problem on front engine cars and Subaru has exacerbated it
  • Top mount intercooler. I probably don’t need to say more
  • Try changing spark plugs
  • Turbocharger plumbing - turbo plumbing is already difficult but when you locate all four cylinders in the four corners of the engine bay, you make it worst and getting perfectly even flow in/out of each one is hard
  • Timing belts must be twice as long (which makes stretch an issue) or you must have two
  • Basic maintenance on the cylinder heads requires removing the entire engine.
Subaru will tell you “but it lowers the center of gravity” which is true... kind of. The engine is lower but you raise a ton of components higher in doing so and make things complicated. They have never offered any numbers on how much it lowers the CG and that’s because it’s a gimmick. Compare these problems to an I4 like in an Evo and you will see why they make so much more HP with significantly fewer engine problems than a Subaru.

Having said all this, Subaru’s are well made and there is talk of going away from the boxer engine. This would mean better performance, reliability and fuel economy. I’m all for this.

Remember, there is a reason why no one else mass produced boxer engines in front engine configurations.

Yep and he would probably call the Rx7 rotary engine a poor design as well. It being the only Japanese car to win the 24 hours of Lemans

The EJ motor from Subaru has also been used in Japan trainer aircraft, and helicopter motors it is a good engine. You can not always believe internet rumors and bandwagon peps who try to trash it just because they blew up their motors with poor parts and tuning.

I didn’t wanna go here b/c can sometimes rub the Ford fanboys the wrong way lol, but I just glance over & chuckle whenever I see a dope in a slammed, pigeon toed, fart-canned, bronze-wheeled, huge winged, bug-eyed subie always trying to F w/ me in my vette....& to be honest sometimes in my Raptor lol! Now- I like a Subaru STI- wouldn’t mind one in mostly stock form as a fun DD beater (especially in winter w/ some Steelies & blizzaks) - but PLEASE stop the but import cheapo sports car nutswinging it’s getting old.

you wanna know what’s a real “big boy” platform to build a proper sports car? Try a C5/C6 vette, a 13+ Mustang, a GTR (but pricey & need later model w/ improved tranny), a ZL1 camaro, SRT8/hellcat etc.

bro- my ‘03 z06 puts down 650 to the wheels can run all day @ a track w/ brake fluid/pad swap, gets 25+mpg still on cruise @ 75mph, probably a high 9 second/low 10 second 1/4 car if I gave a shit about that, the chassis shrugs the extra power off like it’s NOTHING- the car is stiff as slab of billet metal. The tranny holds the power fine. The axle/1/2 shafts/diff all strong. Thing weighs 3350 w/ me in it, 1/4 tank of gas despite the extra 80 lbs or so of blower hanging over the nose.

so ahhh, **** about the weak ass subaru clap trap- plenty of guys on this forum w/ toy cars like mine (& MUCH nastier too) that eat those imports for lunch - and more importantly, DONT BREAK while doing so.

Still lost with your reasoning and was hoping to have a decent technical discussion about pros and cons of various engine configurations. That is hard with someone so driven by emotion.

I wasn’t aware of any aircraft. Which ones? Are they turbocharged? In aircraft, there are different requirements (packaging, heat dissipation), so a flat engine actually makes sense in many of them. A car is not an airplane. I used to fly a private plane with a flat 4, but it definitely was not a Subaru engine. Not willing to risk my life like that!

I got mad respect for those vett’s. If I didn’t live somewhere with so much snow and already have summertime only toys, I’d definitely own one.

I have had two Subaru’s try to race me in the last month or so and one was a freaking FORESTER with a wing! This has got to stop.
