Finally going to get to go back to TRR this year, and since I've several new GoPros I'm thinking about various camera angles. To that end, I have been reviewing old footage.

This is a warm up lap from Texplex last year that - due to exposure problems - I never posted. However, I went back and color graded it to help make the view out the window visible, and I'm curious as to what yall think of it.

Pros:

• See what's happening in the cab
• See how the truck is handling the terrain

Cons

• Far back view, track doesn't take prominence
• Slow feeling

I like that point of view, it gives a good feel for what it is really like. I have mounted one with a suction cup on the moon roof with a similar feel, I think I prefer that placement a little more just because you don't have look at me driving. From that perspective you can also see the speedometer and lowrance too.

That said, you already have those data layers with the speedo, compass, route etc... I think that is pretty sweet. Is that something that comes with GoPros now or is that a custom setup?

I think every GoPro 7 up comes with the hardware required to capture this data. For sure the black versions - and my 7 Silver has the capability as well (while we are at it, never buy anything less than a Black version). One of the reasons I originally bought my 7 Silver was to make this process easier, but in all actuality it is only marginally less tedious than my previous process.

When the GoPro is recording it saves GPX data as part of the file, which allows the GoPro app, desktop program GoPro Quik, and other dashcam programs to utilize it for overlays. However, Quik is so crappy as to be practically worthless, and the GoPro app overlays are really limited in data and customizing - not to mention it is tedious to use. All that to say, I end up using DashWare to pull the data from the videos. Then I usually have to stitch the videos as well as the telemetry data together (over a certain filesize they get split), and then I can finally make a custom overlay. In that particular example I was lazy using the original GoPro gauges, but you can do whatever as shown here:
Prior to this I was using Harry's Lap Timer. I really like the overlay it provides, but the app is super buggy, to the point it was a major motivating factor into buying a GoPro. It claims to work with multiple cameras - even turn on their recording automatically - but out of 30-40 attempts, I only got it to pair once. It is always a toss up whether or not the app will decide to pair with my OBD sensor. That said, when it works it makes for a great result:

The spring holders work pretty well in my experience! I don't think I've really had a cup come loose, now that I think about it. I have left it open a few times, which made for an irritating and unpleasant surprise upon landing.....
