I have been using oil based filters all my life on the race track. I came from sprint car racing and that's all dirt/clay. My brother n law still races 410 sprint cars (world of outlaws) and 1 of his engines cost about $65K! All aluminum block producing 900HP. Yes, he uses oil based filters along with everyone else on the grid. Not everyone uses a filter sock. The big difference here is that they clean and oil their filters after every race and even between heats at times.
I no longer race on dirt but race motorcycles now, and although its on pavement, I still use oil based filters with extensive maintenance. Point I'm making here is the oil based is a great filter with lots of flow but it is designed to be maintained. For daily driving this is not a set and forget type of application. If you want a maintenance free filter just stick with the paper OEM and check it from time to time.
Saying they are junk because you sucked some dirt after putting tens of thousands of miles on it without cleaning it is not fair to K & N or any other oil based filter manufacturer.
I run an oil based filter in my Raptor and all my other vehicles for that matter, but clean them regularly. No issues, but maintenance is key here.

as far as k&n, I’ve had one installed in every vehicle I’ve ever owned, probably 450,000 miles combined over 5 vehicles and never once had an issue. I use the recommended recharge kit and clean/reoil the k&n when I change my oil change (7,500-9,000 mile interval).
I personally an 80% street miles, 20% off road miles so I’m not sucking in dirt every day. But I think a properly maintained oiled filter is more than adequate for most of us.
