GEN 2 Painting “Raptor” Running Board Badges

Bought these “Brushed Stainless Steel” Running board Raptor badges from CJ’s with the idea to paint them color matching to my truck (in my case Ruby Red). Never seen it done before but seemed like a good idea at the time. Already painted brake calipers and tow hooks just for some subtle accents.

I found touchupdirect.com which has a color match for Ruby Red in aerosol form (sadly, I could not find a duplicolor aeresol). Pretty spendy, particularly when getting the option to get the paint and clear coat to cover it.

2 questions:
1) does anyone have any other cheaper option suggestions which matches in aerosol form?
2) any suggestions on prep? Thought using a fine sand paper to abrade surface a bit then alcohol to cleanse/prep surface. I’m not a paint guru so if anyone has any other suggestions so this is durable, I’m all ears. Wasn’t sure about how to handle painting stainless steel.

I’ve always went to a paint shop. Around here we have Tasco. They can get your paint code and put it in a can. I paid around $20 for a regular sized paint can of my lightning blue. Perfect match and they whipped it up right there. You can also get a can of 2k clear which is about another $20 but once you use it, it has to be used within a certain amount of hours. So, if you use 2k clear I would wait until you have enough items that need a clear coat. You’ll need to scuff the surface for adhesion. And clean with alcohol before spraying.

For a cheaper alternative you may try to find a vinyl wrap that matches ruby red?

You already painted the hooks and calipers in ruby red...nothing left over? Are you afraid it won't look good unless you spray it?

Personally, I'd be a little concerned that the badges aren't going to stick to the running boards long term. But if it does stick, than vinyl should stick on your badge.

Thanks! I wanted it to be close to the ruby red but really didn’t want to spend 80-90 bucks for the paint. I think this option will be close enough! Really appreciate the research. I never came across that one.

Appreciate the thought but that Rappygraphics sticker isn’t the same size as the running board logo. Though I do plan on doing that on my tailgate!

The paint I used for the brake calipers and tow hooks only lasts about 4-6 hours once it’s mixed. Could have painted em with what I had leftover at the time had I thought of it. Because it’s a sticker, should be more easily spray painted as I think I’ll get a more perfectly smooth finish.

Used a paint pen on mine. Looks great and has held up for several months now without any touch up and it's waterproof.

I painted some of these and put them on my truck about a year ago. I went with the Orange Accent to match the rest of the Trucks orange that includes the interior accent package (2018). If you are going to paint them I would advise you use a decent primer as well as prep the surface. But based on their location and if you have rear seat passengers I would suggest you get them painted in proper Automotive 2K clear as it is much more harder wearing or use something like the Brake caliper Paint as it will be more likely to stand up to people stepping on them. The 3M adhesive on them is very strong if you clean the surface and use the surface prep that comes with them you wont have an issue. I Pressure wash my truck regularly with no issues.
