I didn't want to put recession in the title, lol but things don't look good. I remember when the Gulf war happened and the stock market crashed I was in High school. At that time I wanted a mustang real bad. I went into the dealer and they were pretty much giving them away. I remember asking my mom for money, of course she said no. Do you think if things get bad they will do that with the Raptor? Or is it such a specialty vehicle that it wont get touched?

It'll take a little bit for the pain to sink in before those kind of deals will be available. That was my experience. 8-12 months of little to no buyers usually does the trick.

First, you need the banks to back off the easy lending, and then you need people to be in some kind of dire straits that curtails their buying habits. Usually being out of work, having slow business, or investments taking a big hit causes the second issue. I got a sweet deal on a 1970 SS Chevelle and a seriously discounted Dodge Ram during the depths of the last recession (2008-2010). I do remember dealers were marking up and selling ZR1 Corvettes during this period - the Raptor isn't as "specialty" as those were.

you could have had an older Fox body Mustang for cheap. Of course... you were in high school, so mom giving you money to buy a Mustang would have been a poor life choice. Admit it... you know this. ;)

specialty, performance or rare vehicles are never ‘given’ away, nor are they ever heavily discounted beyond what you would normally negotiate. They’re the ones that will sit in inventory month, after month, after month. Hell, you can still find dealers charging -over-MSRP on the Raptor; or at least asking for it. The good news is, Ford is making a $hit ton of Raptors, so there’s more of a chance at legit negotiations.

We’re pretty much at the peak of 2020 finances right now, it’s going down from here. Everybody’s budgets are tightening at a corporate level with some very few, and limited exceptions like government alphabets, & contractors directly tied to covid-19 issues, and health care services. Travel industries, service staff, festivals, venues for crowds, sporting events are all being curtailed, and this and the resulting speculative panic is going to gut punch the markets and economy for at least a short term impact.

Bailouts are already being talked about and the real “growth” is in government for LE, FD, EMT, medical services, quarantine related issues and they don’t make money, they cost money. So there will be some ripple effects too.

Should you buy a Raptor?
Money is going to tighten as speculation grows. Low interest rates trigger a surge in finance requests which increases demand which cascades through the economy but eventually, less people will be buying and seeking financing. Rates will again come down and money becomes easier to access in theory, but banks become more conservative in this kind of climate.

The Raptor is always a discretionary purchase, at a premium above run of the mill F150’s. if you can afford it and it’s right for you, then find a deal and go.

You're hoping for a recession so you can get a good deal on a car? lol

Well here's the thing, people hit by recessions aren't shopping Raptors, most hit by recession aren't shopping for a new car at all, and those that have to are looking for something cheaper that will get the job done.

Put it this way, anything you merely "want" but don't in any way shape or form "need" is a luxury item. Luxury items aren't typically discounted by a significant margin. If anything, if Ford sees a decline in sales, they'll likely produce less, which could create a supply issue for these luxury items and have the exact opposite of what you're hoping for.

first off NO!! I don’t want that. Thanks for all your responses. If it keeps going the way it is today I won’t be looking anyway. Wow this is crazy.

That's kind of the point, though, especially with higher end used vehicles being sold by people who got in over their heads when times were good, and now they need to get it out of the garage in a hurry. Save up and have cash handy.

Used is another matter all together. You can certainly find good used car deals from private parties who got in over their heads and are no longer earning the same income.

Crazy times. I was able to buy a new Ram pickup in 2010 at a significant price reduction, like almost 30% off sticker...I realize that was a totally different vehicle from a Raptor. Can't really remember what was going on then outside of just a super crummy economy in general, but also gas prices might have been high as well. No one was buying much of anything, and the government was bailing out these automakers.

In early 2009 tried to buy a (then) new Challenger and they were not dealing much at all even though Chrysler was revoking dealerships left and right. Ended up with a Corvette Z06...at a significant discount. Guess it just depended. Then you had the whole cash for clunkers thing going on where people were turning in GNXs and other expensive and rare cars for a couple hundred bucks...crazy times!

Marc, where do you live? I recently purchased new and got a very compelling deal from a dealer in the NoVA area.
