Preload from a spring or perch collars doesn’t make the overall length of the coilover longer, you’re just pull more travel out of the shock.

Adding a 1” spacer on the top adds 1” length to the entire coilover which is what causes things to over extend

The local “reputable” off-road shop I had install my Eibachs was confused as to why I wasn’t just going with spacers?? They said that’s what they usually recommend. I explained to them why as one of the sales guys pointed to his raptor which was lifted on 2” spacers and 4”blocks in the rear. They were even more confused as to why I would spend money on Deavers when I could just add blocks. Lots of misinformation out there. This forum has helped me a lot.

They did an excellent job with the install and alignment however I am sure they are used to customers looking for the cheapest option to lift.

You are not understanding what I am saying. The banging was from the shock stopping, extending all the way. Nothing else was maxing out. Th strut reaching the extent of the travel, off road would make a banging sound.

Oh, I gotcha. How do you know it was the strut and not the upper control arm hitting the strut?

I wonder if what you were experiencing is the shock topping out from the reduced down travel due to pre-loading the spring. Too much preload will reduce you down travel to the point that you may get to the top out point more frequently. Same would be said for reducing preload and bottoming out.

The spacer that would bolt to the top of the coilover would not cause the above condition but would put your axles, ball joints, etc in a compromised position.

I believe that was what NEO is saying as well as if you have enough droop travel/have extended the overall length of your shock for the UCA to strike the spring then you may feel that as well.

I know because The suspension assembly had more movement than the strut would allow. I disconnected the bottom strut bolt then moved and articulated the suspension assembly and that moved freely down further than the strut would allow. I know what you guys are concerned with premature wear to parts, worn out ball joints and whatnot. What I cant understand is how is the raptor suspension so tight that even a 1 inch spacer would screw things up.
