My new Duratracs were installed this morning. I placed the order for these tires on September 30, and Goodyear didn't have my LT315/70R17 size in stock. The these new tires are of very recent manufacture. The ply information on the tire sidewalls reads the same as that on the set of Duratracs installed in the summer of 2014:

PLIES SIDEWALL 2 POLYESTER + 2 STEEL + 1 NYLON SIDEWALL 2 POLYESTER LOAD RANGE D

An E rated tire does not necessarily have 10 ply. I think it is a 10 ply rating, ie load rating

Are all tire plys the same thickness? Is comparing a 2-ply to a 3-ply the only factor?

I will bet that's proprietary to each tire manufacturer, so my sense is that tire manufacturers buy or make the polyester, nylon, rayon, and steel plies that satisfy the design requirements of each tire design. Put another way, a polyester ply used in a sedan-sized road tire is unlikely to be the same as that on M&S rated truck tire. And if there are differences in ply characteristics from one tire to another within a single manufacturer's line, then there are differences in ply characteristics from manufacturer to manufacturer.

This is the what I was thinking. In theory the ply rating from one manufacturer to another is not an accurate measurement of the strength and durability of the tire. Potentially a 2-ply tire may be stronger and more durable than a 3-ply. Without an industry standard to use as a baseline the ply ratings are a marketing gimmick.

I've heard and read great things about the new BF Goodrich KM3.
Seems like a great tire and quieter than the KO2 from what I've read.
I'd take a look at them.
Or the Nitto Ridge Grappler's.
I'm leaning toward one of those two when I swap out this fall

The KM3 is definitely not quieter than the KO2. Yes, it is quieter than most other MT tires, but not quieter than the KO2. And just like any other MT, it is going to get significantly louder as the miles add up, at a more accelerated pace than most all terrain tires (except maybe the Duratrac, which is technically classified, I believe, as an AT, but in practicality is more like a hybrid like the Ridge Grappler you mention). I have 37" KM3s on my raptor with about 10k miles on them - they were very quiet when new (but again, not as quiet as the KO2), but now a decent amount louder than new at 10k miles.

Become a preferred customer first as you will save quite a bit on product costs. It cost a few $ but well worth it. They than ship to you via UPS. I worked VERY closely with the AMSOIL people for a few years. They did extensive testing on the Ecoboost engines and definitely determined many (most) conventional synthetics can't handle the heat of the twin turbo and break down quickly.
I saw some of the data it was quite interesting. Many Ecoboost blow the turbos for this very reason. I blew my turbo on my 2014 Explorer. From that day forward I've used nothing but AMSOIL!

I had seen a couple reviews and read some articles where people alleged the km3 to be quieter than the KO2.
You kind of burst my bubble as I was leaning toward it (but I appreciate the solid feedback).
