Since all of the replies have been 2017s, maybe it is related to the year model? My 2018 does not make this noise, nor do I have the plastic oil pan... (Not that their related)

My wife’s ‘17 just started making this noise about 2months ago and it has about 45k miles. It only makes this sound in the morning on first start, and it isn’t everyday, but usually. Never made this noise prior to 2months ago.

We took it to Ford and they explained that it is a timing chain issue where the internal chain tensioners relax overnight and causes that sound on cold starts. They had a new engine computer code release that potentially could fix the issue instead of tearing the engine apart to fix. We were the second truck they tried it on. Worked on the first truck they tried, and our truck seemed to be fixed after the computer update, but several days later it started rattling again in the mornings.

They told us eventually we will need to schedule the mechanical fix, but there is only one guy in their shop capable to do the fix and it sounded labor intensive. His schedule is like 2 months out to get to us. They also replace the timing chain during this repair is what we were told.

Nice dig on the plastic oil pan. I also have the 2017 with the plastic oil pan. I also had a 2011 F350 6.7 with the plastic oil pan and put 100k miles on that motor/engine with no oil pan issues. No issues at all to be frank. That includes about 20k miles towing a 31' toy hauler loaded to 15k - 20k# easy with sand rail and dirt bikes/quads. Lots of challenging roads like 9 mile road to Kennedy Meadows half a dozen times. 9 degree grade constant for 9 miles. No turn offs. Also no oil pan issues.

I just purchased a used 2017 with 31k a couple weeks ago and it has the same noise. I took it in and the dealer says it's a solenoid on the transmission that activates upon start up. They said Ford had them check multiple places for rattles and they narrowed it down to this. This is after they told me it was a small water pump that didn't make sense either, but they said the noise echos and sounds like it's coming from a different place?

Picking it up in the morning. I might try another dealer that I was referred to and see if I get a different diagnosis.

This is my first post, but I've been reading and learning a lot here over the past couple weeks, so thank you!

Keep us posted.

I haven’t heard the solenoid theory from any of the 4 dealers I’ve been to now but mine definitely comes from the transmission or something bolted to it. I’m almost certain it’s not cam phasers or anything on the top or front end of the block.

I picked it up and ask them to give me a part number of this solenoid they’re talking about so I can investigate. Tech said there isn’t one since it’s inside the transmission so it doesn’t have a separate part number.

He confirmed it’s covered under the 60k warranty so I’m going to let it be and see if it gets worse over time.

Thanks
