I have a set of BD Squadron Pro chase lights mounted on the lip of my bed, immediately behind my cab.

In looking at these, I can’t help but notice how much of the beam is cutoff by the bed. It’s almost a wast to have them mounted there.

I’m considering buying some aluminum spacers and longer bolts, nothing extreme, to lift them a little higher to hopefully allow more light to make its way over the tailgate.

Has anyone done this or does anyone see any initial issues with this idea?

Thanks in advance for you thoughts on this.

I have seen a number of guys do similar DIY brackets/set-ups like that to make useful chase lights. Yes, the higher the better for visibility. Post up a pic of the finished product.

Thank you for the insight. I will definitely do that

don't overcomplicate it.

If you can see them from 100 yards away. you're good.

If you're moving through a dusty section, the back of your truck will be bopping up and down. Line of sight will constantly change. Just don't stack stuff in the bed that would block line of site and you'll be fine. You want the beam to be wide and spill so it is easy to see at all angles.

Chase lights aren’t meant to shine light onto the ground for better driving visibility. Generally they’re meant for the other vehicles following you, so they can see your vehicle through the dust to avoid collisions.

If you’re looking for lights to shine onto the ground and immediate surroundings, mount them on the rear of your vehicle or on a roof rack.

doesn’t someone make a 3rd brake light replacement that integrates some brights in addition to the brake light? If you don’t have a chase rack to hang them on, a-la the Impulse Offroad rack, then this would get higher elevation, better visibility at distance, etc.

Yes smurf, GJ Motorsports makes a killer one. VERY popular. We stock these over at 4x4TruckLEDs.com - http://www.4x4truckleds.com/gj-motorsports-3rd-brake-light-for-2015-ford-f-150-2017-ford-super-duty/

If you already have S2 lights you can re-use them in here (you may just need a single for the center is all).

However as others have said, chase lights are designed just to be seen from far away. You're not using them to light up behind you. As long as you can see the light you are good. In a very dusty condition it's important to have the chase lights so trucks coming up on you see them.

Look at any Baja Race. They all have them. BUT if you want them up higher and want to add some functionality to your rear (cargo lights) the GJ Motorsports kit is the way to go. It's what Raptor Assault is going with from what I hear as well
