I put pipe lagging around my flag whip, the foam insulation stuff. Stops it from banging against the paintwork and damaging it. Costs about $3 from Home Depot or wherever.

That is awesome thank you. Makes me want to go out to the dunes again next weekend!

Curious if the whip scratches against the tail gate or bumper since the flags tend to flex a lot with wind and speed. I have a chase rack so I just mounted it to the chase rack top. But this is a cool backup idea.

It doesn't, as the first foot or so of the whip flexes very little. If it's a concern, slide a short length of foam water pipe insulation or pool noodle over the whip before installation on the mount.
