GEN 2 Brake issue can become Steering issues...

A Gen2 Raptor owner has come across a strange situation...this is not one of those "I know a guy who talked to a guy and he said..."

He had a ABS wheel speed sensor issue become a steering issue...Here's a nicely done video on his YouTube channel:


Sounds crazy right?....How could Ford engineers dis-able the power steering because of a simple wheel speed sensor?.....I have no idea.

But the story doesn't end right there, I met up with Helio this Sat afternoon in the Cal City area for a nite time Raptor run with 3 other Raptors....We get about 6 miles into the run and he loses his power steering AGAIN...he suspected the left rear sensor (which the dealer just replaced) and pulled the l/r wheel to inspect...It appears the tech replacing the sensor didn't give enough room to clear the hydraulic bump on the RPG kit installed and the air bump slammed onto the sensor lead.

We were able to slice open the sensor lead where it looked damaged and sure enough the wires inside were cut...He repaired the wires with crimped butt connectors, performed a battery dis-connect to possibly clear the ABS and sure enough no lights on the dash and steering returned...We ran the next 120+ miles with no issues..

The wheel speed is tied into the ABS, Traction Control, Stability Control and of course Cruise Control...but this is down right stupid for the power steering to be dis-abed for a simple sensor failure..

Speed sensors fail on their own, they fail off road when damaged from debris, and sometimes when performing brake maintenance...

Some us running off road may think about carrying spare sensors...I run down in Mexico and can't imagine losing my steering down there because the ABS system on one wheel failed...Ford could just shut down the ABS, Trac Control and Stablity and leave our steering alone...
Will keep the forum updated as we look into cost of sensors and see if left and right can be swapped (if so only need to carry one frt & rear spares instead of all four)

It's not crazy, welcome to computer controlled vehicles... with the 2019's, they have an additional point of failure that will likely do the same thing as the abs/speed sensor - the electronic shocks. If one of those go out, it will likely render the truck ***** as well. Not sure it will take the steering with it, but everything else will go.

Have you experienced this in your 19? I came back from RaptorAssault and was really impressed with the 19s trail crawl and suspension. I probably won’t upgrade until next generation, but I couldn’t imagine being stuck on top of the trail and not being able to get back down.

Have you experienced this in your 19? I came back from RaptorAssault and was really impressed with the 19s trail crawl and suspension. I probably won’t upgrade until next generation, but I couldn’t imagine being stuck on top of the trail and not being able to get back down.

I have a 2018. I have seen threads here where the truck lights up light a christmas tree, modes don't work etc. All tied to a shock sensor going bad or being unplugged. I had electronic suspension in one of my last cars, one module went bad and the car drove like shit (I was at the track) until the module was replaced.

Oh yes. heres the deal from an engineering point...Almost everything you do should have a safe default setting...lose a wheel speed sensor, you shut down the ABS, but NOT the brake system...you lose the yaw sensor for the Stability Control...should be more lights coming on and shut down the S/Control...but NOT the power to the electric steering...
It's poor engineering...you never shut down systems without a safe default....Ford ****** this one up!

Yeah... I gotta agree, that’s an engineering fail. Particularly given how prone those sensors are to failure.

I have been getting service advance track, hill start assist disabled, hill descent assist disabled, a wrench icon. All intermittent in my 17..I swear it screams a faulty wheel speed sensor.. I'll clean them and report back..getting the shaft from my local dealer suks!!

Also power steering has gotten stiff momentarily, that's why this thread caught my eye

Man this is bad engineering, you'd think that an oversight like this should've been caught.
