Your actually correct, and the timing chain tensioners are fed oil on their backside ( and it stays there pretty well. The chains from all our tear downs haven’t been stretched at all.

Hello Raptor Fam... I'm new here and I found this thread searching for Gen 2 startup noise.

I have around 2,200 miles on it and the manufacture date is...12/18 but 2019 model year.

I had a Gen 1 (2010 with the 5.4) Raptor before this and I had the phasers done.

To be honest...I've had a number of previous issues with Ford's but I'm a fan so I keep getting them.
This is insane to me. Variable valve timing in one form or another has been around since 1920 and how in the world is this failing on brand new vehicles?

I'm about to go on a camping trip this weekend but when I get back, I will be taking my truck to the dealer to see if they can confirm the issue.
I know it's not terribly bad yet but I just paid a ton of money for a Ford Performance vehicle...and when my cold starts sound like a VW Rabbit from the 1980s...that's really not the experience I was looking for.

I definitely love these trucks and I love the brand...but I'm not really ok with having my vehicles in the shop for 1+ months per year per vehicle.
Maybe I'm a fluke customer in having so many issues. Best of luck to everyone and I'll post an update when I find out more from the dealer next week.

That noise is funky but it doesn't sound like the typical phaser noise to me.

To those who have experienced this problem, I'm curious what your oil pressure showed at cold or initial startup. My 2019's pressure goes to ~60 psi for perhaps 15 seconds then immediately drops to ~30, all without touching the gas pedal. Thanks

Sounds like Lifters to me. Maybe a problem with the oil pump? I hear my Cam Phaser / Timing Chains at start up for 5 seconds but it doesnt sound anything like the Lifter Tappet noise you are hearing.

Some trucks do have post start up noise. My truck had a knock once warm. If you search on YouTube you can find some cam phaser knock videos from 3.5L. Although honestly, that sounds like something else. Does the sound change when you tap the gas or increase in rpms? What does your truck sound like on a cold start (sitting 12 + hours). Good luck man. Whatever it is I can tell you it isn't normal.

I dropped off the truck last week to “diagnose” the cam phasers. They confirmed today it was the phasers and tensioners and will be replacing them under warranty. 2018, about 31k miles but I drove about 4K miles with the startup rattle.
