GEN 2 Gas Octane Question

Whoa, old thread wake up call. I'll bite...

^^ THIS! ^^ I also run 93, but I have an MPT 93 PRX tune, (among other things) so I really need it! :cool:

I drove it the other day without the tune and it was.... HORRIBLE!

I run 93 and have from the start. It probably had stale/bad gas in it from the dealership, I filled it up w/ 93 & mpg/idling/misfires/knock all improved

I’m fairly certain there’s an immediate & tangible improvement in HP/performance too running 93 even on an entirely stock truck- some of the tuners here have disclosed the trucks dyno 15-25whp higher just on 93

I’m fairly certain there’s an immediate & tangible improvement in HP/performance too running 93 even on an entirely stock truck- some of the tuners here have disclosed the trucks dyno 15-25whp higher just on 93

When I picked my truck up from the dealership they filled it with 87 and it ran like that too. Filled it up with premium when that tank was empty and it was noticeable how much better it ran

my guess is that those who can tell a difference with 93 octane also probably "feel" like their truck runs better after an oil change.

Lol- no. I have owned a # of modified vehicles over my life (currently have a 440whp C5Z in my garage) so I can assure you I know the difference between placebo & the real thing when it comes to subtle changes in how a vehicle runs/idles/accelerates

You shouldn’t be making assumptions without doing research. I’m new to turbo engines & while it’s not uncommon for a V8 to run better on 93 vs 87 it’s typically not a significant difference on a dyno with a STOCK tune. TT vehicles are different - my guess part of the reason is they run richer from the factory & lower octane = less combustion = less power generated & more fuel wasted blown out the tail pipes. This isn’t just guessing though- call ANY tuner shop w/ a dyno & just ask if the raptor makes more power bone stock on 87 vs 93 & tell us what they say (hint: I already know the answer)

One of the engineers @ gearhead tuning replied on a thread on this forum plainly stating as much. I didn’t know this for a fact when I initially reported my truck running smoother on 93.

But anyhow just b/c I feel like getting you to fill your truck up w/ a couple tanks of 93 I’ll include this link here from another forum a member posted dyno graphs stock #s on 93 vs 87 octane. Now- these dyno #s seem inflated to begin w/ but that doesn’t matter b/c we’re really concentrated on the delta between the 2 stock graphs.

My opinion is it’s probably solid 30whp gain on avg going to 93 octane & that factory 450bhp rating is based on the minimum recommended 87 octane. Truck makes closer to 500hp on 93 in reality.

But it weights 2.5 tons & has 100+ lbs per corner AT tires so it takes that kinda power to make it feel nimble.

A lot of guys here bought raptors as their first truck, & even More on top of that may have had a truck but not a lifted/modded one. I can assure you that you’d notice the difference in the kinda power the Raptor makes if you took a spin in a GM or Dodge V8 truck that was otherwise stock except for a suspension lift & tires equivalent to the raptor. 1/2 tons rocking 35”s & 3” lifts are dogs.

The raptor isn’t- especially guzzling 93

this isnt snake oil, it is literally proven science. it isnt up for debate.

50 hp increase from 93 octane gas????

LMAO!

why don't you do a experiment? get a 0 to 60 time on 87 octane and the 0 to 60 time on 93 octane.

But hey. I really don't care what gas you buy. Buy what ever makes you happier.

I run our two EB vehicles on 87 exclusively. Between them both, I save nearly $1000 a year in fuel costs. Both are stock. Both go like stink on 87. 93 octane might net me a couple tenths in a 0-60 run, but I'm not drag racing them- so I don't care. I would not run a aftermarket tune on 87.
