Cam Phaser/Engine Failure Reports

I'll accept those rough stats and rest easy. It has always seemed that forums are where people come to voice complaints so they can seem exaggerated.

I have a history of trading cars and trucks rather quickly. This '19 Raptor, however, I really like.

I will say that now that the Cobb Tune is available for the '19, I was seriously considering it. It would be the first time I've ever tuned any vehicle I've owned. However, the thought of an engine failure and them not covering it because of a tune has me second guessing the wisdom of that.

Good luck with your trucks. I'm seeking a buy back on mine. I have not been pleased with how the dealer or Ford handled my situation at all. I love the truck but have not been able to enjoy it like my last one. It's been in to the dealer more times in 6 months than all my last 10 vehicles combined. I've avoided doing any off roading or modding becuase of this.

Good luck with your buyback. I had a Porsche Macan (actually had 3) which was giving me very minor trouble. It was only a few months old. It had a "feature" if you can call it that, an auto-hold feature, where it would apply the brake on a hill, or if you pressed the brake pedal hard at a red light so you didn't have to keep your foot on the brake. It released, or was supposed to, when you stepped on the accelerator.

Well, mine would kick in, or at least it felt like it did, at weird times and drove me nuts, made me lose confidence in it. I traded it in within weeks of it first occurring. Life's short. If I'm not happy with a vehicle, I'll immediately dump it for another one.

My '19 Performance Blue thus far so good. I've got 8k miles on it in about 7 months and heading out for a 6k roundtrip to Utah and Raptor Assault in August.

Yup. Good decision. As long as I'm in warranty, I leave my stuff stock. Some dealers are OK some are not with mods from stock condition.

Getting my 2017 (15k miles) back after 2 weeks in shop. Needed cam phasers and lifters replaced.

At 5000 miles took it to dealership and they told me nothing wrong after hearing the knocking at start up. Took it a second time after demanding a second look. Finally diagnosed the problem and told me to take it back to the dealership where I purchased it from.

Thats BS that they are telling you to go to the Dealer where you bought it. ALL Ford Dealers are suppossed to honor the warranty on new Ford Vehicles, including Ford ESP regardless of where you bought it from. Call Ford Customer Service and report these clowns! But if they are telling you that they probably dont provide good service either. They get paid less per hour for warranty work from Ford than paying customer jobs. Its GREED pure and simple!

What Stealership is this? Yelp 'em!

OK. I got my dealership to order parts in advance....but they only ordered the Cam Phasers. They would not give me chains, tensioners and solenoids that I understand are all updated parts. They told me the would send a report to Ford Technical to get direction and told me to call customer service. The truck has been rattling for 26k so I believe these need to be changed.

Any advice from anyone who had Ford replace these parts?

Without question make them even if you buy them change the two primary timing chain tensioners. We use them and view them as a one and done due to how they retain with a spring clip in these small detent grooves. Seriously, buy them and have them replaced even if you flip the bill.

For those with this problem, is your oil pressure really high for about 60 seconds when you first start your truck? On my 2019 I notice my oil pressure instantly shoots up to about 70 psi, stays there for about 60 seconds when I start the truck, then quickly shoots down (not gradual) to ~25 at idle.

Your very welcome. We haven’t had any problems with phasers on any of the 3 phasers on any customers engines we built. Not to say we won’t, just that we have not had anyone with the noise on any build. Many with some good mileage now too.

On the latest part number supersession it may just be too soon to tell if the phasers will be what starts to act up first. If I had to guess, my hunch is it should cut down on some of the low mileage problems seen, however I really believe the phasers are just a symptom of something else happening. Again, it’s very typical of many v6 variable dohc engines to have timing and cam drive issues. Here are new Intake and exhaust phaser part numbers

I am also of the opinion if anyone is on the fence about buying a new truck because of this, don’t let this sway you into not buying one. They are phenomenal and it’s far less common than it is made out to be. Way more coyote oil consumption issues out there
