There are usually plenty of other people running the trails of Moab, and most off roaders are pretty friendly. Meet some new people and ask to tag along.

I'd also add some tools, a good multi tool, and I never leave home without some sort of firepower... Oh, and more water.

I off-road and venture into the middle of nowhere solo basically 100% of the time. I'm always prepared and everyone on this thread has offered great suggestions. I also recommend a Spot Gen 3 (satellite messenger w/GEOS S.O.S.). If you don't want to purchase one I think you can rent them. They even have an option to recover your vehicle. Also, if you have a smartphone with gps chip, I recommend Google Maps and downloading their offline maps version specific to the areas you'll be traveling. You can customize waypoints with labels and it's all accessible when your outside cell service...it's worked flawless and I've been in many a remote area. Best of all, it's free!

I have mixed feelings about the spot locators. A really good source for real world performance on them is advrider.com.

I have a tracker and a g2(?) locator. The thing for me is that the locators will fail to lock satellites, silently, so by all indications it is working but actually it's just blinking the LEDS in the same pattern as if it was locked on to the gps satellites. At my last interaction with their support in both USA and Europe, there was one workaround; login to a web portal to confirm the first message is sent which can take upwards of 10 minutes.

I have used the messaging feature successfully but if you didn't lock the satellites at startup your location isn't available.
