To go along with that, we don't know that Ford has a redesigned, working cam phaser yet.

Not true. Been a new one since July 2017, and numerous people here and on facebook have reported getting them. This is the first repeat failure I've seen since the new parts (the other two were right on the cusp), but again, if something else is causing it the updated parts probably won't do much.

There was another redesign in the summer of 18 as well since the first redesign didn't fix it. In any case, Ford still doesn't have a reliable design for these. In the past, lockouts were made, but not sure who can make them for this.

That’s incidental start up rattle and almost certainly a “boogeyman” noise. If it’s not persistent and doesn’t last any longer than that, it’s probably nothing.

Don’t buy into the sasquatch77 rumor mongering.

Just replaced the chain on the wife's CR-V, replaced at 61,000 miles, $1100 thank you very much.
They said the oil got low, causing chain stretch (I don't think so) and 1 Qt per 1000 miles oil usage is acceptable.
Got me thinking about oil change frequency for the Raptor with turbos.
Not saying anything about issues others have had with their Raptors.
If I ever doubted the wisdom of changing every 5k, it's gone! (or sooner)
Change the oil on my boats' Yamaha inboard every 50 hours and it looks clear.
Change the oil in my Honda generator annually.
The motorcycle gets a change at regular intervals or sooner if the shifting feels stiff.
Fresh oil is life...

I don't tow but do a lot of cold weather starts and short trips.

With short trips, traffic, lots of idling or the other end of the spectrum - caning the living daylights out of it off road, yeah frequent oil changes are cheap insurance, but even if you’re mixing in a little highway driving, it may be worth an oil analysis to gauge where you are. I was uneasy ( still am) about 10k mile intervals and I just can’t convince myself to push past about 7500 miles under ideal conditions.

Did you measure the new chain vs. stock? if you’ve got a bike you probably know a bit about chains, and how they wear, stretch, seize links, etc. I remember buying a Tsubaki chain for my bike because it had a huge tensile strength. I got 1.5 riding seasons and about 22 or so thousand miles before a couple links seized. That was hugely disappointing, but as strong as the drive chains are, the double roller timing chains are even stronger. They do wear out, but I’d be more inclined to believe the chain was defective on the CR-V. I do suppose that explanation is not impossible but it wouldn’t be my first suspect.

I take my truck in Wednesday for the startup rattle I’ve had pretty much since new. ‘17 built 4/17.

I’ll post an update when I have one. Thankfully the dealer told me they’ll have a loaner.

Update: I dropped my truck off at the dealer last Wednesday 2/13 and I was provided a loaner. It helped I had a video of the rattle on my phone since the rattle was barely present when the service advisor checked it out after driving 30 miles and restarting on flat ground shortly after arriving at the dealer. I also asked the service advisor how many Gen 2 Raptors he’s seen come through with this reported rattle and he said this was his first. This dealer is also one of the largest in the Dallas - Ft Worth area.

As of yesterday, Saturday 2/16, the assigned technician still has not gotten to my truck. This was expected and I would not have tried to get my truck checked out without confirming a loaner would be provided ahead of time.

So, I have read a majority of the posts here on this subject and am wondering, at what point does this become an issue that Ford will replace the vehicle? I'm not sure if replacing cam phasers, timing chain etc is a major project or a minor project, but seems major. In addition to this problem, I also have the transmission clunking issue/hard-shifting issues. I took it in this morning for the above issues. Love the truck a ton, but don't want a vehicle I have to worry about. Thanks guys!

Well obviously ALL the engines don’t have this problem. Whereas there is most certainly some weak point with the camshaft actuators, I also believe there is something the owners are doing that “allows” or otherwise accelerates the manifestation of a problem. Not to say they are doing anything “wrong”, just something triggers it. I’ve run the sh*t out of mine for 25k miles (tuned) with zero problems. Includes drag strip and top speed runs. It’s unfortunate that someone at Ford can’t evaluate all the events for a possible common use thread.
Hell, it could be a specific vendor process that sets up the failure.

I have left mine totally stock. Mostly day to day type driving with handful of offload trips. I'm at 27k miles. Hopefully it just gets fixed and I can move on. Mine is Avalanche and like the color and don't want to have to change, but will if reliability starts to be a problem.

Got my truck back today, dealer says this noise at startup is “normal.” 2nd dealership to tell me this. Even though none of the ‘19’s sitting on their lot sound like this.

At least this time around the dealer went on to explain what they felt the root cause was; they believe the noise is “exhaust surging into the converter on startup.” Doesn’t make all that much sense since I would think WOT would also increase exhaust volume, certainly in comparison to engine startup, and I’ve never heard this same rattle while driving.

Still under warranty and still drives like the same beast the day I bought it. I’ll just live with the rattle for another 16 months / 21k miles or so.
